2001 honda civic ex automatic 1.7 vtec.

recently my tranny went bad on my civic so i looked around and found out the filter inside the tranny gets clogged and causes it to not go into gear or something. so i removed the tranny disassembled it, changed the filter and the clutch pack fibers(on all but the 4th gear) and then reasembled it using new gaskets and reinstalled it on the car.. the problem is the when i put in drive the first gear does not engage but when i shift into 2 it drives and all the gears above it work, reverse also works. it does shift a little rough sometimes when i switch between PRND , mostly R.

i need help with the 1st gear. when i put it in drive and hold the brakes lightly just so the brake lights turn on and i press gas there is a "jerk" and or movement as if the first gear engages but it disengages a second or less later, 1 time i did get it to engage for like 2 seconds so i dont think i messed up inside the tranny. if i just press gas without brakes while in D nothing happens as if its in neutral

could this be caused by some sensor or solenoid? i hope so cause removing and installing the tranny is a pain in the as*.

the check engine light was on but turned off after i disconnected and reconnected the battery so i dint have time to check the code if it matters.

also i dont know if its normal but when i turn on the ignition and all those lights come on for a few seconds the D light also turns on and the off at the same time as the other lights. im not sure i noticed this before i tried fixing the tranny
