2001 Civic Tune Up and Basic Questions
2001 Civic Tune Up and Basic Questions
Whats up Honda owners. I'm getting an 01 Honda Civic sedan in a week or 2. I'm not sure if it's a LX or EX but I know it's not the basic model. It has at least 120,000 miles on it so I figured I'll give it a tune up as soon as I get it. Here are my questions -
- What type of oil is recommended? What about oil filters? I'm going to change it every 5,000 miles.
- What type of spark plugs? Should I just go to Auto Zone and get some NGK ones? Or to the dealership/order oem online?
- What about the air filter? What type is best?
- Same question for the cabin filter/fuel filter.
- I'll check the timing belt/water pump. Where should I go get these parts if I need to replace them?
Am I missing anything else I should do when it gets in my hands? Thanks everyone

Re: 2001 Civic Tune Up and Basic Questions
Oil: you need to search. We have a million threads that talks about this.
The basic answer is as long as you use a good quality brand (ie Mobil, castrol, penzoil, valvoline, shell rotella, royal purple, etc) you will be fine. Those guys who use extremely expensive oil on their civic either have too much money or want the satisfaction that they have the "best." the "extra" protection is negligible compared to the oils mentioned above.
Spark plugs- you can go to autozone and get them. Most of us run ngk iridium plugs. I've ran the autozone brand iridium as well. They work fine.
Air filter- so u have stock air intake or aftermarket? If you have a stock air intake, get oem or fram. Both work fine.
Cabin filter- I have a fram. Get whatever you can find. Not important.
As for riming belt and all that stuff, make sure you buy OEM or Japanese parts. Never cheap out on timing belt and it's kits. You can find the oem timing belt kits on amazon or eBay...

You prob want to change out your transmission fluid as well. Only use oem Honda fluid.
You also prob want to flush your coolant and put new coolant in. Oem Honda coolant is strongly recommended.

Oh yea, don't forget about your vtec fluid. It's the most important fluid on your car. I have a few extra bottles for sale if you're interested.

Is there any way to change my settings so the oldest posts are at top and newer posts at bottom?
Hey thanks for the reply man. I searched and it looks like 5w-20 or 5w-30 is fine. Im going to stick with Mobil synthetic 5w-30 then.

Yeah the whole car is stock. Im not modding it or anything like that.
So pretty much get everything OEM if I can? Makes sense. Is it cheaper to order OEM online or go to the dealership? Thanks again man, nobody else replied except you

Re: 2001 Civic Tune Up and Basic Questions
yes, it is cheaper to order oem online than to go to the dealership. you don't pay tax online but you do pay for shipping, so it evens out in that area, but the prices online are cheaper.
check out hondaautomotiveparts.com
you also dont need to filter out oldest to newest. you can just use the search button on top. search key words and it'll show you threads of interest.
check this thread out, we were able to help this guy save some big bucks. it talks about flushing coolant and changing the transmission fluid.

as for the timing belt this is what you need:
TIMING BELT (oem # 14400-PMM-A02)
WATER PUMP (oem #19200-PLM-A01)
ALTERNATOR/ A/C COMPRESSOR BELT (oem # 38920-PLR-004)
P/S PUMP BELT (oem # 56992-PLM-003)
CAMSHAFT OIL SEAL (oem # 91213-P2F-A01)
CRANK OIL SEAL (oem # 91212-PLM-A01)

it might be cheaper if you piece it together on hondaautomotiveparts
or you can buy it as a bundle on ebay

Re: 2001 Civic Tune Up and Basic Questions
oem = ntk exactly the same. sometimes oem uses denso as well and they are both excellent. some bosch = ntk but you gotta be careful and read the sensors in the box. you are lucky because 01-02 civics use the cheap narrowband sensors ($50) instead of the expensive widebands on the later models.
Re: 2001 Civic Tune Up and Basic Questions
So far I have
replaced the air filter
replace cabin filter
changed spark plugs for NGK Iridium ones
used Sea Foam motor treatment
used Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas tank
got front tires balanced
Theres some other things I want to do but this car is running real smooth & great on gas!!!
