autopage is decent, some shops around here (custom stereo) sell that as their entry level security package. it works and pretty much the important part is telling you when the alarm is triggered. i have mixed feelings about that because if you go running up to your car when people are robbing it, bad things can happen esp if there is more than one person and they are armed.

I think you need to match the alarm type to what your actual needs are. If you have a nice ride and fear it'll be loaded onto a flatbed, then maybe you would need a pager. If you are worried about your rims, a tilt sensor. Vandalism, a proximity sensor. Sound system, interior sensors. Smash and grab, get a glass or shock sensor. If you live in an area high with a lot of break-ins, get the hood pins, back up siren, etc. Just want to decrease the odds, install a cheap flashing light.
I live in a questionable neighborhood near Mexico. I don't have a fancy alarm and always park on the street. Most thieves will move on when they see the blinking light or will run when the horn goes off. Biggest thing is never having visible items in a car that may cause temptation and locking your doors. They have auto set alarms, that do that for you. I say save the money for your car parts wishlist. Do you really need an alarm or is this a reaction to being robbed. My buddy got his FJ broken into. They stole his iPad, GPS, wallet and backpack outside his appartment. First thing I said after saying I felt bad for him was why the h_ _l did you leave that stuff in your car?
