My 8500 X50 has given me plenty of warning from highway patrol, and usually doesn't give me false alarms.

I have no problem recommending any of the high end Escort products, or the V1. I venture to say most people who say radar detectors don't work fall into one of these categories:
- Never owned a Radar Detector.
- Only own (or have owned) a crappy Radar Detector.
- Law Enforcement (and brainwashed into thinking they don't work. Or likely a result of catching people with the aforementioned crappy RD's).

Will a $300+ RD let you down? Probably once in awhile (likely with instant-on, definitely if they're using laser), but I think it's a numbers game. If it even saves you from two tickets, it probably paid for itself.


Regarding custom installed detectors, those are unnecessary. If anything, and if you're really serious about speeding, you should pair up a quality windshield mounted detector (like Escort, higher end Bel, or V1) with a Laser 'Shifter'. The laser shifter should run you $450-600 retail.
- The Escort ZR4 is pretty nice and integrates with all the main corded Escort detectors to let you know when you're getting tagged with laser (and it's jamming it). It also can operate stand-alone for use with non-escort RD's. (http://www.escortradar.com/store/laser-shifter-zr4.html).
- The Blinder is also very good, they also feature a parking assist feature now (so they serve two functions, lol). (http://www.blinderxtreme.com/)

They're legal, and they work (often jam-to-gun, aka they never even get a reading).

now a days, if it saves you from ONE ticket, it has already paied itself off at least 1.5 to 2x.

and laser/radar shifters/jammers are ILLEGAL in california and a few other states.

28150. (a) No vehicle shall be equipped with any device that is designed for, or is capable of, jamming, scrambling, neutralizing, disabling, or otherwise interfering with radar, laser, or any other electronic device used by a law enforcement agency to measure the speed of moving objects.

(b) No person shall use, buy, possess, manufacture, sell, or otherwise distribute any device that is designed for jamming, scrambling, neutralizing, disabling, or otherwise interfering with radar, laser, or any other electronic device used by a law enforcement agency to measure the speed of moving objects.

(c) Except as provided in subdivision (d), a violation of subdivision (a) or (b) is an infraction.

(d) When a person possesses four or more devices in violation of subdivision (b), the person is guilty of a misdemeanor.

(e) Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a person who has a valid federal license for operating the devices described in this section may transport one or more of those devices if the license is carried in the vehicle transporting the device at all times when the device is being transported.

Radar jammers are illegal in all states (Federal. FCC prohibited.). Problem is, there aren't any working ones to buy, even if you did want to pick one up. (Well, not entirely true. There is one that works on X and K band, and I don't mean the RMR snake-oil... the Phantom RCD XP... but good luck finding that for sale. And I wouldn't want to get caught with one in use.)

As for laser... well, the jammers are only illegal in "Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, California, Oklahoma, Virginia, Colorado and Washington DC." And since I don't live in any of those states, I think I'll get by just fine.

But, if you wanted to have a fighting chance against laser and happen to live in one of those states, there are some things you can do to reduce your profile, and make it harder for them to get a reading.
- If you live in a state that is front license plate optional, remove your front plate (It's a giant laser reflector. Newer ones even have a highly reflective 3m coating on them these days.).
- Minimize the amount of exposed chrome and chrome trim on and around the front of your vehicle.
- Use a passive radar-absorptive coating, like Laser Veil (www.laserveil.com) on your headlights (giant reflectors!) and your front license plate (if so equipped).

Additionally, the V1 is basically the best RD at picking up laser signals, so you're best off with a V1 and the aforementioned passive-laser-blocking advice if you live in a state where laser is used and jamming is prohibited.
