Bought 02 SI Need front strut help!
Bought 02 SI Need front strut help!
Hey guys, Well i bought my first car. Its a 2002 honda civic SI . Sure is weird to drive coming from a lifted truck. I almost totaled it on the test drive since im used to driving over curbs lol!
Anyways i can already tell that this thing needs Front strusts ASAP!
it bangs over evey pot hole and has a reallly rough ride!
Since im not going to be racing this thing , i want to put some cheap struts on her. I found some for 125 plus shipping on ebay APX is the brand i believe.
that is for the 2 fronts.
or i can spend about that on KYB GR-2s each.
I had Gr-2 shocks in one of my trucks and they sucked big time. so is it even worth it? twice the price and its not like im going to be racing this thing.
It does however have lowering springs(barely makes it up my alley). Im unsure of the brand but they are red in color.
So let me hear your opinions APX(sensen) or the KYB gr2's?
i will be doing this myself with the DIY on here now that i have a vehicle that fits in my garage!!
thanks!

Are you in canada? If so, the Si is the normal civic (EX in US). If you are in US, the struts will cost more (SiR in canada).
GR2's are not known as too good a shock. Tokiko blues are better and not much difference in the price either. Prices - goggle for tokiko blues civic - you are in the internet anyways.

I've seen Tokico Blues selling for as low as $325 a set recently, because a redesign is in the works and suppliers are trying to get rid of them.
Not only do the last much longer than the garbage china struts and GR-2s, but they are quite a bit stiffer and give a nice ride.

Mindbomber,
do the blues work well for the SiR canada/Si US too? just asking since i am not sure, they have around twice the spring rate?

stick with tokicos they will handle the abuse from bad roads and last at least 5 yrs if not longer. oems are too weak. the tokicos are revalved for lowering springs but work great with stock springs too, in fact the shocks will prolly last even longer.

alright im going to look into a set. This is a Canadain SI so i guess that means its a EX?
I was kind of having trouble finding motor parts. Im guessing its the D17A2?
im looking for new 02 seonsors, and Plugs. I will be ordering them from NGK. but i wanna make sure i order the right ones.

When buying the struts, order 01-02. 03+ are different
O2 sensors are different also - not sure if it changed 03 or 04, but they have more expensive ones (good for us 02'ers)

I've even heard of people cutting the damper shaft and re-threading the end, so they can run them with very low set-ups, because dollar for dollar they're basically the best shock on the market.

Awesome. Thanks alot for the help guys.
but one issue The NGK site is saying there is 2 02 sensors one pre cat and one post cat?
i never noticed one under the car but i can barely see under it , its to low.
I bought a set of ramps today so i could change the oil and what not, It wont even drive up the ramps, the bumper hits haha.

the one in the front is the main one, the other in the back is just so you know if you need a new cat or not. focus on the pre-cat - that's the one that runs your engine. but you might want to know if the cat is going, so you can change it at your leisure.

Yup, they work well on EP3s and DC5s too. They aren't as popular with that crowd though, the people doing those builds seem to favour Tein coil overs for some reason.
