2005 civic oil question

I have a 2005 civic with 55k miles on it. I've used 5w 20 oil as indicated by Honda when I first bought the car (with 11k miles). I noticed back then the transmission used to **** harder and sometimes the engined idled when changing gears. I started using 10w30 oil and the problem stopped. I recently went back to 5w20 synthetic oil, after reading countless articles on sticking with the manufacturer's suggestion on oil types. After l changed it back to 5w20, I noticed the same issue as before. Is this a common issue? What type of oil to you guys use on your 7th gen civics?

thanks

Re: 2005 civic oil question

what's the difference between 5w20, 5w30 and 10w30?

what would happened if I go back to 10w30 or try 5w30?

Re: 2005 civic oil question

It's all thickness. 5W20 is thinner than 5w30 or 10w30. I would stick with 5w30 and don't go any thicker. 10w30 is too thick.

Re: 2005 civic oil question

i switched to 5w30 after the engine got over 60k miles. it wears in and tolerances get looser, so you really need a thicker oil. 5w20 is just too thin if you live in warm climate.

Re: 2005 civic oil question

at about 70k miles i also started using 5w30 instead of the recommended 5w20. i use fully synthetic penzoil 5w30.
