Clear Coat Touch Up
So the dealership i bought my car from had to put their lame sticker on my trunk right before i drove it home. It was a silver sticker on my silver car so it wasnt too big of deal, until someone walking by my car decided to rip it off. And while doing so they peeled off some clear coat. So now where I had a 3x5 sticker i now have a 3x5 dull square without any clear coat.
Question: can i buy some type of clear coat touch up to cover the area? or do i need to re-paint the area.
And who peels off someones dealership sticker? like wtf of all the things to do to someone elses car. guess it could have been worse tho...

Re: Clear Coat Touch Up
are you sure its not left over glue that is making it look dulled ???. i used to detail for toyota and i would remove stickers all the time and they would leave residue that you had to clean with paint safe cleaner. or you could throw on another dealer sticker.

Re: Clear Coat Touch Up
yeah its doubtful it ripped the clear or you would have serious damage. try some goo gone and wax. i bet it comes off.
Re: Clear Coat Touch Up
Unless the car was recently painted. If it is in fact the clear-coat, either take it back to the dealer to tell them to fix it, or get some minor rubbing compound to buff it out. It's cheaper than a repaint of the car.

Re: Clear Coat Touch Up
I know its not residue because you can feel where the clear coat was peeled off. It is possitivley the clear coat. If it was the residue, then that would be raised a little compared to the rest of the paint but it goes down enough were you can feel it. And i bought the car in Penn and its like a 4 hr drive from where I live so bringing it to the dealer is out. what else would you recommend.

Ill try and post a pic later, im at school right now. Is there a way to tape off the area (sense it is a perfect rectangle) and put some sort of clear coat. I am worried it will rust or get worse over time.

Re: Clear Coat Touch Up
prolly gonna have to spray it or something if metal is showing. if just primer, maybe leave it alone or put another sticker.

Re: Clear Coat Touch Up
What do you mean primer. Like the actually primer or just the paint not clear coat? there is no bare metal showing, Im telling you guys just the clear coat came off. The paint is perfectly fine. I tried to take a pic but you cant see it at night. ill try again tomarow
Im beginning to think the dealer has some prank stickers that specifically peels the clear coat off if you stop advertising them... ****ers

Re: Clear Coat Touch Up
ouch that sucks why would someone do that? yeah the clear is gone for sure. the only way you can try to make it look a bit better is get some scratch-x and buff it alot until the edges start to blend in. but that spot will not be shiny anymore. you can wax it once youre done with scratch-x, but only way to really fix would be have the trunk repainted. sorry man. even if you mask off that area and spray a professional grade clear coat, you will still see the lines on the edges. or just find another sticker to cover over it.
this happened to one of my door moldings and i had to replace it. clear just started flaking off completely. and now the new one doesnt match the old one lol.

Re: Clear Coat Touch Up
Well the dealer was a douche first off. So id rather not rep his dealership. and 2 it is in Penn. so not worth the drive for a sticker. Do they make like see thru stickers? like just a clear sticker with nothing on it.
Re: Clear Coat Touch Up
You might try taking it to a couple of body/paint shops and see what they say. If it is just the clearcoat they may be able to touch it up. Since it is such a small area they could probably do it along with another car and that way the cost for the paint and cleanup time for the gun and equipment would be minimal or none. I think it is a matter of finding a shop that is willing to help you out and maybe generate some goodwill rather than just saying they need to paint the whole panel.
You could also spend some time online and find clearcoat in an aerosal can and directions on how to use 800/1000/2000 wet sanding to feather the edges. I doubt that you could get it perfect so it would be a matter of how good (or bad) of a job you can live with.
There is really nothing you can do about it but I would be cautious in the future since my guess is the car or parts of it have been repainted and the clearcoat did not bond correctly to the colorcoat.

Re: Clear Coat Touch Up
Well My uncle is painting my civic in a few months. If it is possible ill have him throw some clear on there while hes doing mine. My question is tho will it match up at all or will it look worse.
Re: Clear Coat Touch Up
I doubt it will look worse. Without the clearcoat to protect it the colorcoat may oxidize a bit but I don't think it will be a problem.
As far a matching, I don't think you will have an issue. The colorcoat is usually the part of the paint that is hard to match, the clearcoat just gives it a gloss.

Re: Clear Coat Touch Up
just be sure its a professional mixed clearcoat and not the autozone special in a spray can. cause the can stuff is not perfectly clear and also will have patterns when it dries like waves and imperfections.

Re: Clear Coat Touch Up
yeah the paint and primer will protect the metal from rusting. if youre repainting in a few months, i wouldnt even bother repairing it til then.
