moonroof parts weight

so far ive torn into the moonroof a lil bit and thought id post my findings. the glass is very easy to remove with just 4 bolts. there is also alot of useless pieces to the moonroof, mostly plastic trims and stuff for covering nuts and bolts. i had alot of nasty rattles and decided to take out the wind deflector, plastic trims, and the sun shade piece. overall it didnt add up to much, but at least the rattles are completely gone. someday i may decide to remove the motor, thats prolly the heaviest part, and just have a manual moonroof where i can remove the glass if i want open air. but for now the motor is way deep inside and the headliner must come off. anyway here are the weights. im surprised just how light some of this stuff really is.

-plastic moonroof glass trim pieces and hardware (0.5 lbs)
-sun shade (3.5 lbs)
-wind deflector (1 lb)
-moonroof glass (12 lbs)
-misc brackets and hardware from sun shade (1 lb)

altogether i prolly lost around 5 lbs taking off non-essential parts (the glass is still there). and the interior actually looks cleaner now and more open.

Re: moonroof parts weight

thats not much weight at all. i cant imagine the motor would be more than about 15 pounds itself. i remember reading somewhere (not sure if it was you that said it) that the entire system is around 150-200 pounds. i thought theres no way in hell it is, i figured it would be max about 50 pounds altogether. i wont ever touch mine because its such a nice feature to have and that totally outweighs the performance youd get from removing the weight.

are you leaving it like that or removing more?

Re: moonroof parts weight

i might try and remove the motor, my roof has always had problems working properly anyway (i have to push up while tilting it or it will jam, and sometimes when closing it doesnt seal properly). i tried to fix these things when i had everything apart, but after spending 1/2 the day playing with shims and adjustments, it wasnt much better. i shouldve got the LX lol.
