Why, Why, Why!?...

As some of you know I've been searching constantly for an 03-05 sedan (blue) speedometer. I have a coupe with blue accents on the inside so I really want those blue gauges and by the life of me I can't find it! It is getting really old checking ebay, google, junkyards, etc. and finding nothing. On top of it I need a manual one and that just makes it 1000000000000000000000 times harder.

So I'm getting frustrated...I've come to the conclusion I don't need the mileage to be near because I'll just reflash it. I really want it to be a manual cluster. What I do ask is does my LX w/ srs need a 4 door cluster with srs. Also, does the 4 door cluster need to be North American built or will it be the same Japan built?

Help a fellow Civic man...a frustrated one at that...

Re: Why, Why, Why!?...

I think the blue one is a hybrid cluster... so, search for a civic hybrid cluster, also, some of the stuff on it won't work. Hope this helps a little bit, do some research on the cluster swap before buying it. I think gearbox has been playing with it a bit.

Re: Why, Why, Why!?...

the hybrid cluster is completely blue, with red needles. the EX/LX has blue rings, white numbers, and red needles. im guessing you want the EX/LX cluster and not the hybrid. and yeah manuals are hard to come by.

Re: Why, Why, Why!?...

grr, in canada the EX has red rings... which drives me crazy because the car is blue, my deck is blue.... everything is blue, except the stupid rings. I really don't get why they would do that. Maybe I'll swap out for the blue rings myself.

Re: Why, Why, Why!?...

and gear isn't it a better swap if you pretty much get all of the same specifications for example an 03-05 coupe lx (red ring) manual, w/ srs, north american built for an 03-05 sedan lx (blue ring) manual, w/ srs, north american built...because if you get an ex the abs light will light up and if you don't have srs and you get a cluster w/ srs it will light up...correct me if I'm wrong...

Re: Why, Why, Why!?...

just found canada blue ring cluster. these new clusters are cheap as hell! barely $50 shipped for most of em on ebay. the blue and red ring clusters both light up the same, in fact they use the same white leds. one just has blue tinted rings, the other has red. numbers are white and needles are red on both.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/03-04...Q5fAccessories

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/03-04...Q5fAccessories

hybrid civic looks the best, all blue leds, red needles

the 03-05 LX/EX coupes have red rings, notice the italic "sporty" numerals

the 03-05 LX/EX sedans have blue rings, notice the plain "boring" numerals

Re: Why, Why, Why!?...

there are only a couple things to worry about using the wrong cluster. if you have an EX, and you buy an LX cluster, the LX cluster will not have abs light (anti lock brakes), so if the abs has a problem, you will not see the light. the other problem you have is if you have a dx/vp (no abs) and you get an EX cluster, the abs light will constantly stay on. the "side srs" light does not matter, since if you do not have the side airbags, the light never comes on. everything else is pretty much the same. oh yeah in canada, the clusters are in kph not mph, and they have a washer fluid icon and also a different brake icon (!) instead of (brake).

ok now it all makes sense. ive never seen that hybrid cluster or that blue ring sedan cluster until now. i dont like the hybrid one becuase to me it looks like it belongs in a truck. small stocky needles. and i dont like the numbers on the blue ring one. i also like the coupe style cluster with the red rings and italic numbers.

yeah i love the look of the coupe red gauges, but my whole look of my interior lighting is blue...head unit, interior illumination, license plate light, engine bay...etc...and I've never noticed the difference in the sporty numbering and the regular block numbering.

Gear I'm liking your mod on the extra lighting in your speedometer. Hard diy?

Untuned you have the red gauges with your blue interior illumination...doesn't it annoy you? I know it gets to me...

yo why go through so much trouble when you can buy the face kit, and put a blue tint film behind your cluster? Seen it done, and have done it myself works just as well.

if you like the glow, its easy. just take the black bezel cover off (remove two screws at the top and pull the whole piece towards you), and put a led strip at the bottom of the clear plastic cover. plenty of room. i made my own with orange 5mm leds on a radioshack circuit board, but you can buy led strips too that would work check besthongkong.com

also yeah you can use films to change the new cluster colors, but its doesnt work too well. on the red ring cluster, you can slip red transparent film from the back to make the numbers red (so the whole thing is red). same goes for the blue cluster, you can use a blue tinted plastic sheet, but its not gonna be a deep blue like leds. white leds do funny things when you filter them with color plastics. and the brightness will go down too. so try to use a thin, lighter color tint sheet. check office stores for the tinted transparent folders and stuff, or check stage lighting sites/stores. other colors should work too. i thought about having something like that but they were not bright enough during the day.

Re: Why, Why, Why!?...

the cluster faces they sill kits for them. I know the job itself isnt hard, Im talking about finding the parts you get the same quality out of this conv. Its easier to get the parts for it and cheaper.

i dont have that cluster. my whole cluster is silver with white numbers during the day. at night you dont see anything except red needles and all orange numbers. there are no rings. i like my cluster and i dont mind the orange at all, even though my interior lights and stereo are all blue.

Re: Why, Why, Why!?...

So...thanks to all your help I received my 03-05 lx 4 dr. (blue gauges) north american built, manual w/ srs speedometer. It looks great and wasn't too expensive...now i just gotta search on how to install it the correct way. One question i have about the cluster i received. The cluster i received, the needles are at 3500 rps, 60 mph and gas/ temp are at the middle. When I install it and hook it up will it flash to the correct readings on my car?

Thanks...

Re: Why, Why, Why!?...

um, the needles should all be at their minimum setting. like 0mph, 0rpm, etc. hopefully they will go back to normal, if not you may need to open it up and push them back down. sounds like you got a defective unit tho. i got one from a member here and either he messed it up or shipping did it, both gas/temp needles were off their positions and would not work at all. had to get another one. those clusters are very sensitive and too much shaking will throw them off calibration.

heres prolly the best diy thread.

Re: Why, Why, Why!?...

Yeah that was my worry too...hopefully when i plug it in it will just calibrate itself correctly. On the 01-03 to 03-05 thread they had a paragraph on cluster issue similar to mine and he manually moved it to the starting position and then they ended up working correctly so hopefully it'll work perfectly right away...if not i'll do what the thread says...then if not...i'll send it back...I might just out and try it right now...

Just one thing...When I pull my original cluster off will it just have the blue and green plugs connected to it and then I just pull those two off and pop in the new cluster?

Re: Why, Why, Why!?...

whoa there, did you read the diy? you can't just plug it in. the connectors will fit, but all the wires will be in the wrong positions. you have to completely re-pin the wires according to the new diagram. and yes disconnect the battery because there are hot wires you will be playing with. just follow the diy and pop each wire out, then put them back in following the new diagram. i used pliars to pull them but ended up damaging some of the wires. a pin popper from a computer store is the way to go. and be sure to unlock the connectors first by popping off the tabs on the side of each connector.

I thought I only had to re-pin if I had an 01-03 and was changing it into an 04-05 or vice versa...i'm doing an 04 coupe to and 04 sedan...i thought it would just be a pull and and plug
