Aftermarket Muffler
Re: Aftermarket Muffler
if youre just cutting your old muffler on and welding or clamping a new one on, dont use a muffler any bigger than a 3.5" tip. why are you doing that? catback systems are cheap and they replace your entire piping and everything. your stock piping is only 1.75" and just putting a muffler on that will sound like ****.
Re: Aftermarket Muffler
yea i know a cat-back would be better , but i wasnt looking to spend like 500 on exhaust .Thats why i was considering just a muffler . What cat-back system would you recommend?
Re: Aftermarket Muffler
you can get on jegs online and get fairly cheap universal mufflers, like under $100. at least in my area, most exhaust shops can do a custom cat back with a muffler you provide for under $300, if not cheaper. if you still want to do just the muffler, i'm sure that would def be even less.
Re: Aftermarket Muffler
i would also recommend that. do 1 of two things
a) remove your entire stock exhaust and get the shop who is welding your new muffler on to do some new piping for you so you have a full system thats bigger than the stock 1 3/4" piping.
b) get a full bolt on catback system
the advantage to option a is that if you ever want to remove it, you can do that and put your full stock exhaust system back on if you ever have a problem. if you cut your stock muffler off, and put a new muffler on, it might be annoying later on down the road to cut the aftermarket muffler off to weld the stock muffler back on. dunno its up to you.

Re: Aftermarket Muffler
as far as pipe sizing goes, i ganked this off of motoiq.com.
"Pipe Diameter Guidelines
Some basic exhaust pipe diameter guidelines for stock or bolt on modifcations, non-turbo cars are as follows:
1500cc-2000cc motors- 2 inch
2100cc-2500cc motors- 2.25 inch
2600cc-3000cc motors- 2.5 inch
Add ¼ inch to the pipe diameter to optimize for [nitrous] use. [Nitrous] increases exhaust gas volume. Remember that this may be too big for optimal operation off of the bottle. For turbo motors 3 inch is the minimum size pipe that you would want to run, even for the smaller motors. For turbo motors larger than 2.5 liters, the biggest tubing (usually 3.5 inch) that you can find is appropriate. It is almost impossible to have too big of an exhaust on a turbo car."
On my NA volvos i ran 2.5", and they were 2.3 liter motors. i wouldn't go more than 2.25" on our cars without a turbo.

Re: Aftermarket Muffler
if your going to get just a universal muffler i would recommend a OBX twin loop. http://www.2kracing.com/Product/18298.html
