What to prepare for(Turbo related Thread)

Over the course of this year I shall begin learning and preparing for a turbo setup. As my car sits, it is completely stock. My power goal is going to be around 200whp+ ...nothing too crazy but it seems once most people have that kinda power they want more so I'll see once I get there. I won't really have the money to do this till next summer so I got plenty of time to plan it out and I will still try to get the parts as cheap as possible. Pretty much this will just be a thread to figure out what all parts I can get without breaking the bank and achieve my 200whp goal(So does this mean I could use something other than kpro). I guess a big question is can I run enough boost on a stock internal engine to get 200whp and it still be reliable. I like my power but I also like a car that doesn't break down on me once a month. I have read through most of the DIY and other things such as speedfoos thread but my thread needs to be specific because I am not trying to kill it on the street. So if some of you all could help me pick some parts out that would be great but like I said I don't plan to buy anything for a long time while I save up.

Re: What to prepare for(Turbo related Thread)

Save yourself a lot of pain and wallet-induced trauma and get kpro. If you want if reliable, you absolutely have to have a standalone. Everything after that becomes a lot easier. You don't have to upgrade the stock MAP sensor, or the stock fuel pump if you're going to stay under around 9 psi and your car will be just about as reliable as any un-modified Civic out there.

Seriously, I know you don't want to hear it, but kpro is the key to a successfully boosted car.

Re: What to prepare for(Turbo related Thread)

Well maybe around the time I am ready to purchase parts or as I am doing it I will run across one used or something. Will 9psi net me the results I am looking for. Will I at least need to upgrade the cam?

Also for my exhaust, I am in the market for something that is quiet yes has a good sound and is loud when you want it to be. The RSR seems to be what I want but that is on the expensive side at $500ish, I've seen some Apexi WS2 videos and they seems to be decently quiet and do what I want when its in the higher revs. They have it here http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/APEXI...Q5fAccessories

but wouldn't it be cheaper to buy this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/APEXI...Q5fAccessories
and have a shop make me a pipe to go to the back? I think they are the same thing or does this exhaust actually suck?

Re: What to prepare for(Turbo related Thread)

9 psi should do it for your goals fine. A stock cam will handle 200 hp, but a stg 2 cam will make it to 200 with less boost. If you decide to go higher power Try to find a 2.5 inch exhaust. That should be big enough to meet your boost goals, but if you decide to go any higher you will need to upgrade to a 3" exhaust. I understand the desire to go for a cheap build, but getting a standalone EMS will make your life so much easier. Its better to get an EMS now and get the turbo later than it is to do it the other way around. I know you've heard it before, but it really is a night and day difference. Tuning is hard enough without trying to fight against the stock computer. Trust I've done it both ways, and so has foos.

Re: What to prepare for(Turbo related Thread)

So its better to get the kpro first and have that run my engine and then add the turbo on. Also what about 2 post up on the exhaust. Is that a good idea and have a shop run a 2.5 or whatever to the back.

BTW Clint do you still have the dash from your old car?

Re: What to prepare for(Turbo related Thread)

Yes getting k-pro first then adding a turbo is by far the best plan. Plus you can pick up 20-ish hp off of k-pro N/A. As for an exhaust, you can buy an axle back and then have a shop do the midpipe if you want, but it may not sound too great. If you want to go the diy route, you might look into a vibrant street power muffler and have the shop do the piping for you.

I didn't think the pipe from the cat back would make a huge sound difference? I really like either the WS2 or the RSR, nothing thats so loud I get a headache from driving my own car like half the people in my town.

I do still have the dash. It's sitting in my attic until someone either buys it or I give a try at modifying it to fit my volvo.

Re: What to prepare for(Turbo related Thread)

Can you comment about the exhaust question?

Lol at the dash in volvo thing, what I was thinking was trying to swap in the cluster from a newer civic into my dash. I have someone who can fab the dash off mp3car but I'm not sure how diff. the signals are because I can't find a pinout anywhere. That would be a while though because I am broke with college right now. I guess If I get the spare money to do It Ill throw you a PM and still see if you have it.

Re: What to prepare for(Turbo related Thread)

For exhaust, I really like the vibrant street power muffler. It's black and stealthy. Check out vrsexhaust. If you are serious about this turbo thing and want to go farther you may as well go ahead with 3" from the get go. If you go with 2.5" it won't be big enough if you want more power later. VRS has a piping kit for the 92-99 civic that fits rather well. Grab one of these LINKY (I can't seem to find the black version of this right now. Then have someone weld it all up. You'll also need a couple v-bands in the same size you choose.

Re: What to prepare for(Turbo related Thread)

I hate buying pre-fab exhaust. Baron is on the right track with getting piping and fabbing it up. Much cheaper and you get exactly what you want because you pick all the components.

Re: What to prepare for(Turbo related Thread)

The WS2 is a decent exhaust, or it has good reviews at least, but it's not meant to be a turbo exhaust. It is designed for as a bolt on for a stock (or close to it) motor.

60mm inlet,105mm tip

I just really don't want a loud exhaust.

Re: What to prepare for(Turbo related Thread)

The turbo itself acts as a muffler, so keep that in mind when you are thinking about exhaust. Your primary concern needs to be flow. So a 2.5" (minimum) exhaust with a free-flowing, non chambered muffler at the end is a good base to start from.

Re: What to prepare for(Turbo related Thread)

Ahh so the WS2 would be a bad pick since it comes in at like 2.3622" inlet and so does the RSR...so what other options are good that arnt going to break me.

If you don't want to mess with modifying the tranny tunnel to run the exhaust right down the middle, you can go with this setup.

http://www.mandrelexhaustsystems.com...EXHAUST/Detail

Then you just pick a muffler, a resonator, a cat and have it welded up. You would esaily be able to get a full 2.5" custom free-flow exhaust for less than $350-400 in parts.
