led fogs/drl's
led fogs/drl's
I was wondering if anyone has seen or done this on their 7th gen. I'm comparing this to how Audi has either daytime running light led strips along their headlights, or the strip of leds in the grille to act as fogs. I like the look, and think it could be achieved fairly cheaply, but I can't find any examples to go by. I've seen it on the 8th gen, on TSX's and whatnot....anybody got any ideas?

Re: led fogs/drl's
I know what your talking about, I'm interested in seeing it on the tsx and 8th gens, I havent seen it done on any car besides the ones it comes stock on.

leds in fog light area of grille

leds in headlight like audi's daytime running lights

I'll find the 8th gen that I saw too...but there's the example of the Acura I saw with them on. They seem to do the job and they're cheap led strips instead of the cost of the whole foglight assembly.

mejn, the second link is the ones I was looking at. I think the 4.7" ones are probably the best fit for the gaps in the bumper, or in the fog light space, but they are unfortunately on backorder right now.

Re: led fogs/drl's
theres really no clean way to do this on a civic. and those led strips are very dim anyway. audis use hi power leds that can be seen during the day. you can get led bulbs for the fog lights, but they arent that bright either. maybe try making your own with quality leds, but imo it wont be very bright without proper optics. those leds are barely brighter than a parking light whereas drl should be hundreds of lumens like at least as bright as the turn signal.
Re: led fogs/drl's
I see what you're saying, Gearbox...but the leds on that Acura look pretty bright. I'm assuming you mean the beam doesn't have much distance, which I pretty much already know. I'm just trying to think of a clean way to do this if I can.
And if not, then I'll have to put the leds elsewhere.

Re: led fogs/drl's
i can make anything look bright with a longer camera exposure. if you look at the pics tho, you can see that the leds are no brighter than park lights. i dont know if youve seen any of the newer audis (ive seen both headlight and foglight models), those are so bright you can see them from a mile away in direct sunlight. in fact theyre so bright that audi decided to make the leds deactivate on one side when the turn signal is used. there is no way you will achieve that intensity with regular leds. you need to step up to the hi powers. even the new cree superflux white leds are not that great unless you want them just as park lights. not to mention alot of the audis and other cars use special lenses to amplify the light. similar to the 3rd brake lights of many cars that use leds. a normal strip of the same leds would be twice as dim without the focusing optics. now some vw guys have done it the right way and bought the whole audi setup and retrofitted to the car.
Re: led fogs/drl's
Being that I know pretty much nothing about wiring individual leds together, and how I would use focusing optics to enhance them...I either need to drop the thought or figure it out. Do you know what kind of hi power leds I would probably need?

Re: led fogs/drl's
well check out ledsupply.com to get some ideas. cree XRE are prolly your best bet because they are so bright and still run cool compared to other leds. at 1w (350ma), they put out 100 lumen and only require a small heatsink on them. thats a ton compared to other leds that put out barely 30 lumens at the same power level. you will need led constant current drivers to power the big 1w and above leds tho and you can get those at besthongkong.com. i have 1w leds as my plate lights and dome lights with a 1w driver for each. it just depends where and how you mount them cause you need some room for heatsink and the driver. they are not as bright as you might want without any lenses on em tho. it just throws light all around like a light bulb without actually being very intense. i think you should start by learning about leds first so you can use reliable pieces and make it yourself. even many factory oem setups are poorly engineered and often fail as a result of too much heat or overpowered.

Just flipping through EBay I did find these... They are not DRL but they are Fog lights, check it out.

Re: led fogs/drl's
yuck lol. its not bad but would look out of place on a civic. theres no real spot to put it other than hanging from the bumper. the housing is not bad as a starting point for adding better leds.
