Passing Power
Passing Power
2004 Honda Civic LX Coupe (stock no mods)
I am new to the Auto tuning scene and it seems like I have stumbled upon the right site to ask some questions.
I live in fairly mountainas area of the pacific north west. My Civic is awesome in town but when it comes to riding the Steep Highways it seems underpowered I am always at 4k rmp and find it hard to pass anyone even on flat highway stretches.
I was hopeing some people could offer some suggestions of some fairly basic and inexpensive mods to get a little more power to help with passing and lower my rpm's to stay at highway speeds on a steep highway.
I also had a few other basic questions
I was wondering if it was normal for this model of car to make a slight whistling noise under very light depression of the gas peddle. The best way to describe the sound is a very light break squeals and it only happens when I am just barley touching the gas peddle and it does not matter what RPM or Speed.
And for my final question I have noticed that the Injectors are very noisy I can hear them whenever the car is stopped and really hear them if I pull up beside another vehicle or a drive through. I have been told before by a friend that is normal but he is not much of a mechanical guy and wanted a second opinion.
Any replies would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

Re: Passing Power
hate to break it to you man but there really aren't any inexpensive mods to make our car fast, with the basic combo of intake, headers, and exhaust you won't even notice the gain if there even is one. as far as the whistling noise or hearing your injectors, i don't know, i've never heard my injectors or nor has my gas peddle ever whistled

Re: Passing Power
injector click is normal on these cars. as for power, its only a 90hp engine, not much will change that to be able to tame those mountains lol. just keep it in lower gear but the rpms will be high to keep you from losing speed. if you do that much mountain driving, i would suggest a different car with more power. you can try some weight reduction and take out heavy stuff in the car youre not using, that will make the engine have to work a bit less to keep speed.
Re: Passing Power
yea everyone is right. the most basic power gains are from intake exhaust and header, (which are pretty much the cheapest performance mods you will find) and they arent even really that cheap. youre looking at spending anywhere between $600 and $1200 in total for the combo if you install it all yourself, depending on quality and manufacturer. even at that, youre only looking at a horsepower gain that you can probably count on one hand.
as for the high rpms, when youre going up a hill dont be shy to drop it a gear into 3rd or 4th just to get a bit of extra power. it wont harm your engine at all, our engines are designed to take that. they rev high because of the lack of power, so dont be too gentle on it.

Re: Passing Power
when i drive from vegas to cali, driving through the mountains sucks on my civic, i start up the hil in 5th doing 95mph and by time i get to the top i'm in 3rd doing 60mph, mountains are torture on our cars but like untuned said, don't be scared to downshift and run at high rpm's, our engines will handle high rpm's better than some people think, afterall they are high rev motors
Re: Passing Power
most people would like to but it's really expensive...i for one would to drop a k20 in it, but i don't have the money for it plus i don't have time to just let my car sit without a motor, its my DD

Re: Passing Power
I use nitrous to pass!!! 8) Its only a 50 shot, but it zips me right around those other cars when I need it! I know its stupid, but nitrous is fun and I cant wait to use it again!
