coupe speaker install
this weekend i got around to installing my new infinity kappa 692.9i speakers into the back of my car. i ran into a few problems and i got really frustrated.
have any of you guys installed 692.9i speakers and ran into these same problems? they were on crutchfield.com saying they worked fine for our car, so let me know, and let me know what you did to get around them.
anyway, i removed the metal seatbelt bracket things first (take the advice in the diy and remove them completely, dont just take out the one bolt and fold it up because i did that, and my door swung shut and i put a nice big dent/scratch on my inside door panel.)
i removed the rear interior, removed the rear deck, removed my stock speakers and got ready to install the new ones. the first problem i ran into was when i went to install the new ones in place. i removed my stock speakers (which sit flat on the car) and i went to install the new ones and they would not sit flat because the magnet at the bottom of the speaker was hitting the trunk spring thing. i placed the speakers ontop of the provided spacers and the magnet now barely cleared the trunk spring, but it did. i had to use their provided long screws but i was only able to get 3 of the 4 in which was more than enough.
at this point everything seemed ok until i went to put the rear deck back on. the new speakers were sitting up about an inch higher than the stock ones which sat flat...and combined with the speaker covers on the rear deck sitting low, it was a huge bitch to finally get the deck over the speakers and jammed into place. i broke a few clips while doing it too, and barely any of the 7 white clips caught back into place of the rear deck. once i finally forced it into place i had a bitch of a time getting the pillar panels in place again too. you cant notice anything now, it all looks fine and i hear no rattles or anything..but what a bitch. did any of you with infinity kappa 692.9i run into this?

I'm surprised for having such a hard time that crutchfield would even have the product listed as fitting.
You know what I just checked crutchfield for a 2003 dx, a 2002 dx, and a 2002 si and found that it says that none of those are compatible with the kappa 692.9i.

Re: coupe speaker install
If they are mounted in the rear deck, you dont need any speaker grills on them- I'm not familiar with those speakers, is there any way to take them off?

Re: coupe speaker install
hypnotic20, its an 02 ex coupe, look that up and you should see them on there.
trizz, i dont have the speaker covers on them. i meant that if you look on the bottom side of the rear deck, you can see how the speaker covers stick out downward so that they press flush against the stock speakers...if you know what i mean. thats what i meant by the stock speaker covers sit low. the deck is designed so that the speaker covers built into it sit pressed down against your stock speakers which are completely flat.
when i installed these, i had to use the provided spacer which looked like about 3/4" between the car and the speaker so that the magnet barely cleared the trunk spring. the speaker itself is also a bit thicker than the stock one at the top so overall i had the speaker sitting about 1" higher than the mounting position whereas the stock one sits right flat. with it being that much higher, and the stupid deck speaker covers sticking out downard, it made it a huge bitch to get on. the first 3 times i tried getting it on and clipping it in, the speaker covers of the deck were pressed against the new speaker and making it sound like **** but i somehow finally got it in the right enough position that i dont hear any of that and they sound great now. i dont know, i was tempted to take the rear deck and cut off the parts of the speaker covers from underneath that stick out.

Re: coupe speaker install
yea i had the same problem...somewhat. i have alpine type-r's in the deck and the ginormous magnet would hit the cross bars. the bars would especially rattle against the magnet when music was on cuz of the varying magnetic field but then i just kinda moved the bars out of the way and bam...problem solved
Re: coupe speaker install
You probably need the spacer, or atleast thats what i got from what i read. Also like someone else said you do not put the grills that come with the speakers on. The factory plastic hides them anyways.
PS --> if you needed spacers crutchfield would have provided them if you bought from them. Crutchfield provides extra stuff to make speakers fit.

Re: coupe speaker install
im not sure if most of you guys are following what my main problem was...
the speaker will just BARELY clear the spring in the trunk if you use the spacers they provide, so once you use those spacers everything is ok. but now the speaker is sitting about an inch higher on the vehicle than the factory speakers which sat flat on the vehicle. in other words, when you try to force the rear deck on, the stock speaker covers that are attached to your deck are literally pressed right against the new speaker.
and maple...which speakers exactly? 692.9i?

Re: coupe speaker install
well they work, they sound good. it was just a huge bitch to get installed, even getting the screws in i had to use my fingers because the speakers are up too high and the speakers too close to the glass so i couldnt use a screwdriver. by the time i got them low enough to fit the screwdriver, it was too tight of a turn so i had to twist them downward from underneath.
anyway i have to mess around with that pillar cover on the passenger side again, its sitting on my back seat. i was driving home on the weekend and it fell off. everything is such a hard tight fit that i will probably have to go get some more clips since i broke some trying to put the panels back in place.

Re: coupe speaker install
Untuned i have the exact same speakers you have and i know this thread is old but i have to agree with you. Getting the speakers in was a total B man. I have the same problom with the pilar type things one is on tight and the other i cant even get on the correct way and almost all of the clips are broken. Where are you getting your clips from? Also i got my tint done and the guy complained that they could not get tint on the far bottom left of the back window i assume because the space has raised the rear deck plastic cover.
