Re: 2005 Coupe EX getting horrible MPG

well i have an 02 manual vic lx.. and ive noticed that the fuel gauge is far from accurate. i get about 416/tank. thats wen my car actually dies out.. weird experiment i did which left me in the middle of the highway!! lol. but i fill up wit 87 and at half tank i actually get 165 miles.. and my light usually goes on at 291aftermy gas light goes on,i actully get 110 miles more.. so i usually fill up at about 400 miles to the tank... i drive about 70% city and 30% highway.. so trust me let ur fuel tank go to almost empty.. that gauge is a piece of crap.. the only mod i have is an aem v2 intake

Re: 2005 Coupe EX getting horrible MPG

also try and shift at 3k rpms!! it helps.. and dont go any faster then about 75... ull get the best gas mileage like dat.. and i personally have tried diff gas brands.. and the one that worked for me d best was Bp/amoco.. the gas brand mattas big time!! dont go cheap wit gas brand.. sunoco gave me about 330/tank and shell gave me about 300/tank so trust me wen i say that the brand of gas counts.. each gas brand is diff..

yeah, the gauge is kind of messed up, but why is it different when you fill it up at half tank? why would that affect mpg?

Don't go by the gauge. The proper method for finding out fuel mileage is fill the tank all the way. Don't try to top it off or anything, just let it go until the pump stops. Then go drive around for at least 100 miles. Then go back to the gas station and top the tank off again. Record how many gallons you pumped and divide the mileage driven by that.

Example:

You drive 210 miles. When you fill the tank back up, you put 7 gallons in it. Divide 210 by 7 and you get 30mpg. That is the only accurate way to calculate your fuel mileage.

Re: 2005 Coupe EX getting horrible MPG

i had bad gas milage a few weeks ago. i did everything i could and now i have got 38mpg for the last 2 weeks on city driving. (not extremely stop and go) here is what i did:

Changed my oil to full synthetic (Royal Purple 10w30)
Changed my oil filter (HAMP shortie)
Started using LC20 and FP60
checked tire pressure and inflated to 2psi under the max
drive casually 90% of the time (i still get on it to 5 or 6k once or twice a week)
bought a new air filter for my SRI
changed spark plugs (NGK Iridiums)

lc20 goes in the oil, fp60 (or fp-plus) goes in the gas.

^Doesn't lc20 snake your oil? It won't mess up critical engine parts?

Re: 2005 Coupe EX getting horrible MPG

wont mess up anything. it emulsifies carbon (puts it into solution) where it gets taken and trapped in the oil filter. they did oil analysis after 10k miles with lc20 and said the oil was still okay to use lol. its good stuff and i would never use anything else. almost 3 yrs for me now using it daily, and i have no engine problems. runs as smooth as ever.

Re: 2005 Coupe EX getting horrible MPG

also when do you shift. if your car is an ex and you drive like a bat out of hell then your mpg is horrible. this is because if you rev (sure of exact number but) 5600 rmps then your going into your vtec. if you keep doing this alot then your mpg will go down. when i did this before just for an experiment i got around 20mpg and thats it. including some highway. this is because in vtec you get about 10mpg or so. or i was told.

Re: 2005 Coupe EX getting horrible MPG

I thought I'm the only one with bad mileage ...
Two tanks ago before I got any maintenance done, I got 24.5mpg.

Things I did after:
Royal purple synthetic oil change
Denso Iridium spark plugs
Cleaned Air filter
New Cabin Filter (Doesn't do anything anyways)
New brake pads / rotors (Don't know if they do anything either)
Fuel cleaner solution used twice

The tank I just drained out, I got 28.7mpg.
I'm happy with the result .. better than nothing.
My car is auto and I drive under 3k most of the time .. i recall going over 3k just twice in my last tank. I just used fuel cleaner again on this new tank .. so i'll see if there will be even more improvements.

Edit: I do ALL city driving .. no where near freeways ..

Re: 2005 Coupe EX getting horrible MPG

Hey man,

Ok so i was reading your post and i have to say i find it *sigh* ... amazing.
I am Canadian and i own a 2005 Si-G (well i guess to you it would be same as EX in US, at that time in 2005 that was the model) and i currently live in California. I drove my car in dead of winter 2007 through basically entire USA (from Toronto to LA) and i cannot tell you how amazing it felt to get the miles i got. Now i am not sure if that makes a difference but my car says it was built (Made in USA) but most parts came from Japan (or so they say based on the technicians looking it over and parts used in it and engine). It is basically a freak of a car. I have raced older model eclipse GT, camry, etc (around 200hp cars) and i beat them or they barely beat me by like 1/4 length. It is just a great car and i cant say i havent been lucky with it. The only thing i have done to it is put AEM intake to it and thats it, no other mods. And my car is Manual btw
In the brochure that i got it says my car is 13gal US and 48mi/gal. So i wanted to test it out. My trip basically took me from Toronto to Indy first (well out 30 miles outside Indy to be exact) and that is the first time i filled up after i left toronto. I drove 100km/hr (60mi/hr) the whole way, cruise control and i basically went 797km on 1 tank of gas. Now i believe that was just me pushing it to the final limit, cause when i filled up it was like 12gal i filled up so that was just closeeeeeeeeee! After that i basically drove it about 75mi/hr on avg and i still got about 600-650km/tank which is good as far as i am concerned. Now i also just over the weekend went from Sacramento to Downtown LA when my light came on (my Garmin said i drove 410miles at that point) basically i had 10L (about 2.5 gal). I then filled up once i got to the other side of Irvine (i was going to San Diego). I could have gone another 100 miles for sure driving 60miles/hr but i didnt want to risk it.

So the point to this story is basically i would have your car looked at (not necessarily by Honda cause they may just rip you a new one). I am not saying there is something wrong but there could be something (like oxygen is not getting a good mix, your Intake is just mixing it too much, you have bad spark plugs or simply engine slugde). I am sure there are some performance places that can test your car and check it out or find a good mechanic (god knows those are harder to find then a virgin but you can find them hehe). I take good care of my car, i dont beat it i dont rev it up i dont really abuse it (but maybe once a month i will open it up a little on the hwy; about 80-90miles but thats about it). I put super gas every 8-10 fill ups just to clean it out a bit cause it helps a little but it is really not that important (if u never did it, it would not make some catastrophic difference) Also you may want to try and change gears under 3000 rpm, not to start fast, try to avoid busy routes, etc etc.

I am not trying to be a smart *** (maybe it sounds like it), i am just trying to say that 21mpg is just ... it's like you are driving a Hummer lol

Good Luck!

Re: 2005 Coupe EX getting horrible MPG

I just bought a 07 civic ex coupe with 34000 miles on it and i wanted to see what gas milage i could actually get. I went 406 miles on 11.211 gallons and averages just below 37 mpg. I live in Jersey so this is hard due to going 70mph is considered slow. I kept the rpm under 3000 the entire time but i was pleased with what i got.

Re: 2005 Coupe EX getting horrible MPG

Its been a year now, i dont know how your car is running as of late.
But, I have a 2001 Civic Ex Sedan, at over 100k. Bald *** tires. Havent check the pressure for a while. Need an oil change. Need and alignment. With all that crap, and im sure theres plenty more i need to fix. I still get 25-28mpg all city.
So yeah something is definitely up with your car. Hope you got it all figured out by now. Yes??
