This is a very good question, though I think there are several factors that determine the acutal mileage left, i.e. driving style and terrain(city/highway).
Anyone know a rough estimate?

as soon as the light comes on go fill up. take the number of gallons you placed in the tank and subtract that number from the rated fuel capacity of your vehicles tank. when you have determined this amount, multiply the number of gallons remaining by the approx. fuel economy of your vehicle. this will allow you to determine how many miles you may travel once the fuel light indicator is illuminated.

usually around 2 gallons ive noticed. it means you need to drive to a gas station. provided the fuel sender is working properly.
