First gear lockout?

I have an 04 Civic Si and it seems really hard to shift into first when moving. No, I'm not talking about suddenly throwing it into first moving 50KM /h. I'm talking about moving maybe 10KM/h and just moving it into first either because I was forced to slow down on a hill and will need the power, or I'm wanting to get 1st gear lined up for a launch after a stop sign (or to pull off one of those really nasty rolling stops.)

Yes, I know I could match the revs and so on (which doesn't seem to work for me either, but I could be doing it wrong) but I want to know if this is normal behavior or if I should have this looked at.

It's not as hard of a lockout as the 5th-R on ours, but there's definitely a lot of resistance.

Rev-matching should do it; I don't see how you could be doing it wrong. Clutch goes in, blip the throttle up, slide it into 1st. If it's resisting, don't force the shifter harder, give it a little more throttle because you're probably not revving high enough.

Re: First gear lockout?

There's no "lock out" on these transmissions. its the synchros preventing the gear to engage due to the difference in rotating speeds of the input and output shafts.

Solution. Rev match the down shift. Double clutching will help greatly as well.

Yes, double clutching greatly helps. This may sound kinda wierd, and don't ask me how it works, I just know it works. My dad taught me that when it gets really hard to jiggle the steering wheel back and forth a couple of times. I don't mean a half turn, I mean like an eigth of a turn back and forth helps.

Re: First gear lockout?

Thanks guys, double clutching and rev matching works like a charm

I'm curious though as to what speeds other 7th gen owners are able to downshift into first without double clutching.

Edit: Yeah, I can't shift into first anymore unless I'm fully STOPPED. There's something wrong here
