Stock spark plugs vs. aftermarket?

So I'm closing in on 100k miles and with it changing my spark plugs.
I was curious if there is any difference between stock plugs and aftermarket?
I know the stock ones are iridium and that I should get iridium ones to replace them, but does it matter if the plugs are from honda or not?
I know some regular plugs give better performance and some fuel mileage, but is there a difference like this with the iridium ones?
Any specific brands I should go for? I'd love to get better mileage and don't mind paying more for something better.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Depends on who you want to listen to.

Unless you think you are smarter than the engineers that specified the plugs (I know I'm not), then use exactly what they specified for best results.

The correct plugs will last another 100k if all goes well.

I know the stock ones are iridium and that I should get iridium ones to replace them, but does it matter if the plugs are from honda or not?
Whatever source you can get them from is fine, but use the correct plugs.

Any specific brands I should go for?
OEM.
NGK IZFR6K-11S or
DENSO SKJ20DR-M11S
but is there a difference like this with the iridium ones?
Platinum and Iridium tip material (or coatings) are what allow them to last 100k or more without significantly increasing the spark gap due to wear..
Standard plugs would be wearing down by 30k, the gap is widening. Plug gap nearly doubles by 60k. Excessive gap causes undue stress on ignition coils and other components.

I know some regular plugs give better performance and some fuel mileage,
Strongly disagree. '
I can't buy into the hype on commercials, nor weekend road warrior TV shows (infomercials), nor anything heard at the Dangerzone counter.
(Maybe you've heard my opinion on their Bosch Platinum plugs already? https://www.civicforums.com/forums/p...614-post5.html)

I'd love to get better mileage and don't mind paying more for something better.
Plugs don't gain you gas mileage----- unless you already have problems because of the plugs---- at any price.

(IMHO, I bet the original Iridium plugs would outlast the car without a problem as long as there is no oil burning issues and no other problems causing the plugs to foul.
We have many cars and vans with well over 200k on the original plugs, even a few with 300k+. Some people won't spend a dime unless it quits running.)

Looks like you need to order them online, or find another dealer.

Show them the msrp and ask where they get $40 each price from.

Re: Stock spark plugs vs. aftermarket?

Dealers are free to set their own markup as they see fit.
Many will bargain if you go in prepared and know what the price should be. Others won't.

Customers are always free to go elsewhere. Vote with your dollars.

Yup. Some places have margins they must hit.

Other places have figured out that a good portion of the customer base is computer literate and can find out what MSRP is supposed to be before they leave the building.

Nope. Sounded to me like she went to the parts counter. (That's what I pictured in my head, anyway.)

I always thought it must be tough to turn a profit if nobody will buy your product.......much like the million dollar glass of lemonade I have for sale.

But apparently someone must have figured out how to retire off of percentages instead of actual money.

Price a set of plugs for a 12-13 Civic Hybrid......at MSRP.
Keep in mind there are 8 of them on that engine.

you don't exactly need to get them from the dealership... as long as they are the specified ones, you should be fine... (wanted to have this clear for posterity)

naw, I don't think that was the installed price. He was ready to charge me $160 + tax and hand them to me

And yes, that was the parts counter I went to.

Re: Stock spark plugs vs. aftermarket?

I wonder many people would actually pay $40 for a plug over the counter at a Honda dealership? I could see that at a Mercedes or maybe BMW dealership but people who drive Civics, LOL. Otherwise I could only see that being paid if they slipped it on to the bill with services hoping the customer wouldn't notice.

If they said that to me at my dealership I would have laughed right in their face....and maybe all the way out the door.

Ezone - why on earth are there 8 plugs in a hybrid? Are we talking the Nissan King Cab all over again?

Too many things I can say here, maybe it's best that I don't say anything.....for once.

I could see that at a Mercedes or maybe BMW dealership
Why? Do they get plugs that are even MORE special than ours?
Seriously. I've been away from them for many years now, and they all used pretty average plugs back then.

but people who drive Civics,
Some of these are pretty freekin high tech cars now. Technology costs money.

Apparently PuterChick should have. Maybe she did. Hope she did, anyway.

Or the 2300 Ford (Pinto) engines.
Ezone - why on earth are there 8 plugs in a hybrid?
Emissions, AFAIK.
Ask the engineers that dreamed it up.

12 Civic Hybrid
Honda part # 12290-RW0-003
NGK - DILFR6J11
USD $40.13 each
X8
Plus labor.
You know how many people would FREAK out of we tell them the little underpowered Hybrid uses THAT many plugs that cost THAT much?

Can you find a set of those on any of the common discount parts store websites?

Not all Benz drivers have Mercedes money.

You can bet about half are just using it as a status symbol and are up to their eyeballs in debt.

Yugo owners don't scream as loud as some when it comes time to pay.

Mercedes is very eco conscious these days...they even make an electric car now.
