Question Help w/ Voltmeter Install

im working on the install of my autometer voltmeter... the instructions say to use 18 gauge wire but all radio shack had was 12 gauge, so my question is would the 12 gauge be fine. im far from an expert on electrical type stuff. last question... i know you can use the gauge to monitor any 12 volt power source, so by hooking the gauge up to the + terminal on my battery, I would be able to monitor its output correct? one last question, seriously, the instructions also say to hook the light on the gauge up to the dash light wire... meaning to tap into that wire and splice the gauge light wire to it, correct again? thanks in advance.

with wire guages, the bigger the guage, the smaller the cable, so goin smaller guage is never a bad idea hooking the guage to any positive line in the car will give u a pretty close reading to what the voltage is across the terminals, the voltage loss is minimal if any at all. the best way to hook up the light wire is to use a t-tap. there worth there weight in gold, radio shack sells them

For the lighting you can also tap into the instrument cluster wire harness. This way your gauge dims with your regular gauge dimmer....

Yeah, tap an ignition controled wire for the actual voltmeter, and the illumination wire for the light. That way the light only comes on when you turn the car lights on. The wire is somewhere in that indiglo gauge diy here.
