you'd have to take off the cigarette lighter panel, and unscrew two bolts screwed in a metal bar from inside there. then you could pull out the whole top radio/center console (still a hard thing to do, just be careful). I don't think you would need to unhook any of the electronics, but it would be easier if you had the front of the console resting on a seat or surfacen, and have the back facing up wards towards you. then look at what's there. You only have to do some pulling from that point on.

No you don't. When I take mine out I just take a flathead and pry at the edges of the console and it just pops right out. Then I unplug everything on the back and i'm good to go.

if you follow the DIY for replacing the HU, the vents come out with that, its all one big piece. Once you pull that piece out, your going to want to remove all the connections for the ventilation controls and the hazzard flashers, it gives you more room to work with. i found the best tool to get that center piece out is a panel popper

Nope, not on mine. I've removed my dash 4 or 5 times now.

I have those bolts in my '02.

I wouldn't pry out the center console from the outside. That is almost a sure fire way to mar the dash.

Take off the power outlet piece and stick your hand up through there and feel for the back of the center piece. Then push outward on it and it will pop the center out an inch. You can easily get your fingers under and pop it the rest of the way out. I have seen some marred dashes in the member's rides section in the past.

Those bolts hold in the Factory Radio so if you have an aftermarket radio installed you wont have to worry about the bolts i think.

the 2 bolts secure the whole radio cage to the rest of the car, you can still put the bolts back in with an aftermarket HU

I have always had to take the bolts out in order to get my center console out. Like was said before, if you try to pry from the outside, you are chancing messing up your trim. Just undo the two bolts, reach up inside and push it out from behind the radio.
