hey there...i know everyone--EVERYONE has already complained about how the D17 so far has been a pretty crappy engine ("ohhh, the b-series is soo much better"). uhhh, i guess i agree (though it's not like i know from experience). well, now i'm just wondering about the rest of the car; how well is it built? i know the 2k1's have rattle problems and stuff, but that's just because they put the interior in crappily. umm, what i'm trying to say is, if you have the same engine in a 6th gen and a 7th gen (i KNOW, not really gonna happen), would the chassis, suspension, whatever, of the 7thgen be just as good as the other? how much potential is there in a 7th gen?
p.s. i don't really get this, but what exactly did honda do to the suspension to get rid of the bump in the back seat? the dealer guy mentioned it, but i didn't really get it...
btw, yeah, the obvious downside is that the engine bay is smaller, but as long as a k20 can fit, s'all goooooood

The d17 is crappy now because it is brand new. Look at all the d16 engines which everyone said that that motor was crappy till recently when the started to have more high performance acessories for it. Yeah a b16,b17,and b18 is better but what I am saying is that the d17 is still new. The more they work on the engine, I think the more high performance parts they will make. Just wait and things will start to pop up.....Hopefully
well, yeah, i know that people say it's crappy cuz it's new and not much is out for it ("so far"). i mean, i don't plan on doing a swap any time soon...or even later on. so i guess the reason i asked was that i want to know if this gen civic (not considering the engine) can be abused (obviously not to the point of being stupid) like, a 6thgen for instance.

the missing hump on the floor has nothing to do with suspension. It has a flat floor because it's high enough off the ground that the exhaust could be routed through the bottom of the car without it needing a spot under the car. Then again...it might make the chassis stiffer..but I don't really think it would.
oh, ok. i didn't know about the bump in the back. thanks for the info. and yeah, i never--NEVER--abuse my car anyway. i just didn't know how to word my question the right way. thanks ppl...
The 7th gen chassisis enormously rigid. In the IIHS offset crash test where 40% of the vehicle's frontal width is slammed into a honeycomb barrier -- extremely demanding on the vehicle's structure, the 7th gen A-pillar moved backwards 0 CM. In other words, no movement of the safety cage. Very well managed the crash energy. Take a look at the BMW 5 Series on the other hand (while still an extremely safe car), it's A-pillar moved back 5 cm. Hmmm... that's compromise right there. As you know, there should be no room for any of the main structural membersof the safety cage, it sacrifices driver space in the case of an accident.
