Inaccurate Tachometer

I just installed a tachometer in my DX. I can't afford a nice one and a friend had one out of an
old escort or some Ford product. That might be the problem. Anyways, after I was finished I
fired her up and all was fine. I went for a test drive and wanted to see how accurate it was at
high rmp. So I floored it in first and it reved out at 6700 according to my tach. I know that is
wrong. The tach is only good till 8000 and the set redline is at 5900, maybe this is why. I
thought it might have to do with voltage or something though. I spliced into my radio switch
power for power. Thanks

first of all, there is no distributor on our car. next, the whole wiring through the radio. get a new power source. and with mine i got, it was a little off all older civics tacks were off a little bit, so i put one in knowing it would do it to mine too.........

It's ok if it's a little off. The main purpose of a Tachometer is for MANUAL Shifting. Since we have a DX, assuming it's automatic, it doesn't even matter. That's why DXs come off the line without Tachs. They're not necessary for automats.

And please don't use Ford for parts. Ford parts get replaced and discarded for a bad reason.

No, it is a manual not an auto. And it's not just a little bit off, it's out about 700 rpm. I like to race and this doesn't help. I think that I need a new power source, and that thing about tachs from different cars being inaccurate probably has something to do with it also.

Is it off by a percentage, or just by 700 RPMS... if the later is the case, just change your shift points...
