Jacking up car, jack stands, hi-lift, etc
I need to jack up my stock 02 coupe. I've never jacked it up before. My friend has jackstands and a Hi-Lift that he uses for his Jeep. Should I use the Hi-Lift or the jack that came with the car (for changing the spare tire)? How should I do it? Should I do one corner at a time, or the front then the back, or visa versa? Is there a place on the front and rear where I can put the lift without damaging the bumper?
Pictures would be great, but any help is greatly appreciated.
I just want to make sure I'm safe as possible and not damage the car (or myself).

its all in the manual man, use the jack that is given to you , there is a certain place behind your front wheel and infront of your back wheels were the jack clings to the car, but u can only lift the car one corner at a time.

do not use the stock jack. there was a post a while back about the stock jack giving way and coming down. if you are going to work on your car get a better jack from an auto parts store (got mine for around 40 bucks). only use the stock one when you absolutly have too. jack stands are good. never used a hi-lift.

Ok I looked at the manual but it only shows you the stock jack. Could I use it just to get it up on jackstands or could I use my friend's hi-lift? I don't really want to buy another jack just for this one time thing.
The manual doesn't say anything about jacking it up from the front or rear using a jack or hi-lift. Is this possible?

I know you dont' want to work under a car with just the jack holding it up.
Will the stock jack go high enough to put jack stands under it? Is it ok to raise it one corner at a time?

I've done a lot of things under the car. Headlights (which i later found out...didn't need to take bumper off) and my cat-back system. Lifing one corner at a time is really the only way to do it (ie. changing a flat in the middle of the desert.)
I suggest using anything except the car's stock jack. That thing is cheap and not reliable IMO. Use your friends jack then use jack stands to be safe.
I don't think civics can be lifted from the front or the back.

Hmmm...$35 isn't too bad. Plus then I won't have to take my whole subwoofer system out of my trunk to get the damn jack

Get a two-ton jack from the auto parts store and use jack stands. Or if you have them at your disposal, you can use ramps, that's what I used. Careful not to scrub the front bumper though. Don't always rely on the stock jack, IMO it's mainly for emergency use. The owners manual has all of the lift points for the car, DO NOT jack the car from the front or the back, there are no jack placements. With a 2-ton jack, you can raise the side of the car high enough to get both jack stands for that side under the car.

Under the center of the front bumper there is a arrow pointing to a "lift pad" the pad has a hole in it. Center your jack under the hole, put jack stands on the lift points just behind the front tires,(you'll see where the metal is notched out). If you jack up the back center the jack under the metal tow loop and place the jack stands in front of the rear tires on the lift points.
I bought a high lift 2 ton jack and have used it many times with no problems, I needed the high lift because my other jack wouldn't raise the car high enough for me to place the jack stands under the car.

OK it turns out my other friend has a floor jack...the kind that slides under the car and raises the whole thing up.
I think I'll use that

I've seen the stock jack work fine and break but under certain conditions.
And that condition is...
If your aftermarket wheels are heavier than your stock wheels do NOT use the jack that came with the car, because it WILL eventually fold and result in your car hitting the ground pretty hard. You can hurt yourself or your car. All in all, I wouldn't recommend it.
My experience comes from me needing to have my car jacked up after it was a few days old with the stock jack from a flat tire. Then my friend's Civic was raised with the stock jack and he had heavy 17s on his car. We tried lifting it up from the front left side and the jack didn't last long at all when we were done getting it in the air.

I ended up using my friend's floor jack and it worked well. We lifted it from the front and rear, but when we tried lifting it from the side it dented the undercarriage ...oops. hopefully it didn't crush anything important.
