It's easy enough to do, but the parts will cost you a bit of cash. Buy a whole engine off of Ebay. It's cheaper than buying a manual tranny from the dealer. I've seen whole D17's go for about $500. Funny, huh? Then you'll need a manual guage cluster. Get the new '03 one; won't be too cheap though; about $250. Maybe more, I'm not sure... Then you need the brake and clutch pedal assemblies from a manual tranny. That's another $100. Then there's the manual shifter assembly and basically the entire center console. Get the Revo Technica SS to have a short shifter. Another $100. You might want to get the '02 one for the hiding cup holders, or the '03 one for the built-in arm-rest. That's another $150. Then there are the cable attachments to the manual tranny, depends on if you get your Ebay engine with those or not. Probably not though since K series swaps keep those. That's another $125. Then you've got the mystery. The ECU. I don't know if you'de need to swap that out, but I think you would. The fuel maps are based on different gear ratio's and less gears. If that comes with an Ebay engine then you're saved. If not, then you'll spend about $450 for a new one.

So yeah, for parts we have about $1675. That's if you're lucky though. There's probably more that I'm not aware of. Then there's installation. No DIY for something like that. I doubt that there ever will be one. I would trade in your car for a manual instead. It's easier and you'll have a newer car with certain features that you didn't have before.

Right now I have an auto, but I actually would like to someday convert it into a manual when I'm older and turbo it. The parts add up to a pretty pricey number, but I'm pretty sure finding a total loss car won't be too hard. I see so much salvaged cars now on sale.

The reason is that I love my car and would like to keep it for as long as I live as a memory of what I drove when I was a kid. I thought it would be cool to show the kids what I drove too...haha. So maybe I'll do the swap in like 7-8 years after I'm done with graduate school. Also turbos will probably go down on price after the next generation civic comes out. Can you guys believe it, one more year and that will be the last year of our gen civic.

I guess I'm just glad it's possible to do the swap, but it will probably be more like buying a new engine and transmission after I hit the 200,000 mile mark. Gee, never thought about buying the gauge and console. Oh well, always good to learn new things. Till then, it's suspension mods and interior modifications. Hey, it's more economical that way too...haha.
