Remove Exhaust resonator? Sound?

- As a decent Christmas present to myself, I ordered the N1 muffler from Rob at Tornactive. It should hopefully be here soon. (I wish I could just go pick it up, I live 15 min away from him!) That is a fairly loud exhaust, now I don't know what to do about the resonator. I'm going to be getting 2.25" piping, and I've heard that removing the resonator causes a loud ricey exhaust? My goal is to get a nice deep exhaust that doesn't attract cops from miles around. So: to keep it or not to keep it? Also, how does the silencer factor in? Does it change the exhaust tone or just the noise level? I know it decreases airflow (and theoretically, power), but will removing the resonator and stickin the silencer in get the tone I want? Thanks!

Nice choice. I have the N1 style, but i'm getting rid of it this week because it's too loud for me sometimes.
Here are my experiences:

1. N1 style muffler only (no piping or anything) = VERY quiet

2. N1 style muffler + 2.25" piping + NO resonator = Throaty! Sounds like a muscle car sorta.

3. N1 style muffler + 2.25" piping + aftermarket 2.25" resonator = Medium Deep sound

I say you get your "N1 + 2.25" piping + NO resonator" and see how that sounds to you. It will probably be a little too loud, but you can always come back to the muffler shop and have them weld a resonator for $35-60.

As for the silencer, it decreases your performance and it makes your exhaust tip look like a coffee can. Sound is almost eliminated with the silencer. (Use it only when visiting parents )

Hope this helps,
ak

I had the entire down pipe custom replaced, cut the resonator off and put a Hayame muffler on. It's really deep and loud. Past 30mph and it's very noticeable. After about 60mph and it's mind numbing. Kinda cool, but my head rings after a long trip.

Having no resonator is loud but very deep and not ricey at all. IMO no resonator will probably atract the cops but it is nice and deep. I say just take the resonator off and then later on if it is just too loud put an aftermarket resonator and then the sound will become bearable

here's what i say, just get the reso flanged and get a pc of pipe flanged...this way you can add it or remove it any time, your bound to get stop by the cops with out a doubt...so when time comes you pop the stock reso in and exhaust in and there u go...i love flanges...no need to keep going back the muff shop when fixit ticket comes...do it all myself...and i only have to pay for one time...

Any idea on the cost of adding all those flanges? I also want one connecting to the cat, so I just take the whole thing off and slap my stock one on there if I need to.

There already is a flange on both sides of your cat, on your resonator and on your axle back muffler...

what about if you just remove the resonater and weld a straight pipe in it's place? what kinda noise you get from that?

With any muffler it is going to sound like garbage, ricey, raspy, rediculously loud, (unless you have a turbo to quiet it down)...but most of us dont....i did the custom w/o a resonator and im pissed...Im going next weekend to have an aftermarket resonator put in...

Any resonator (no matter what size) will always reduce sound. This decrease in sound leads to the demise of the raspy sound... which is
