dont waste your money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

with all the money you will spend you could do some REAL engine work to your civic , plus if you do it you will regret it soooo much when you find out your 1/4 mile is the same

I agree. There's nothing spectacular about the EX that makes it innovative. EX VTEC sucks anyway. The Civic is the worse example of a real VTEC and you'll just be disappointed in the end. You'd be better off putting your money into the forced induction and taking advantage of the lower compression ratio in a DX/LX engine. I'd rather encourage you put your money into some internal engine work and a REAL ECU upgrade. Don't think just because the engine doesn't have a VTEC in it means it's crap, it's an engine... and any engine can perform better than it normally does. Just do with what you have. why would you have oiling problems? the block is the same, the headgasket should be the same...I doubt honda made very different parts between the 2 engines. I'm going to try the swap if I find the parts cheap enough....I'm sick of the don't do it posts just answer the guys question if you don't know leave it alone....as far as I can see you'll need the head, manifolds, vtec solenoid etc and the computer...

i've heard that you need the ex transmission too, but i don't really believe that....if you haven't already searched i would suggest you do so, there have been many posts about this

Thanks for all your ideas. PlatCruiser, we both live in the phoenix area so possibly we can get together and make a list of all that would be needed.

First of all you should ask yourself what do you want from youre engine... If you want 10 to 15 more horses the vtec head is a good idea... If you want more than 30 horses you should try to save for forced induction... If you are an all motor junky buy the head and wait for some pistons and a cam to come out.
In my case I got lucky and bought and found a VTEC head on ebay and bought it for 150 and Im going to install it during the hollidays,
things I will need fos the swap:
1- VTEC head
2- RPM switch

Before any of you start replying that i will need this and that let me explain.
The VTEC comes with the solenoid, so you dont need a solenoid since you already have one. The VTEC computer and the non VTEC computer are the almost identical. Up to what I know the only difference is that the VTEC computer activates the VTEC. This is why i will need an RPM switch, to activate the VTEC "manually". With respect of the manifolds, the intake manifold is the same and the exhaust manifold (header) bolts on. The only problem i could see here would be if the porition of the manifold was different and the exhaust wouldnt line. Nothing a muffler shop couldnt fix.

In conclucion if you find a cheap head buy it!!!

p.s. Im going to dyno my car before and after the swap.

good post...I have a V-AFC laying around.....reason why I would think you would need the EX computer is doesn't the map sensor (dunna know which yet) switch fuel tables to add more fuel with the air coming in on the vtec transition. hell if it comes down to it I'll just install the V-AFC on this car and buy a S-AFC for mine...I can tune the AF on the dyno so I shouldn't have a problem .I don't think you need a ex tranny since I'm using the LX block and the tranny is already bolted to it

The oil problems that he is refering to are related to the lack of an Pre-drilled VTec Oil Line. i believe the with any HYBRID engine, i.e., Vtec head mounted to a NON-Vtec Block, you will need to drill a Vtec Oil line into the block, as NON VTEC blocks are not equipped with this oil line. regardless of whether its DOHC or SOHC or its year, i am pretty sure that it is a must, and therefore you will need to do it too. id definitely do you research on this one. as for cost efficiency... well, for $150, thats not a bad price for a SOHC Vtec head, however you will never see drastic improvements or advantages from this swap due to the lack of potential in these SOHC motors. obviously you can build them up to be ALL MOTOR or Forced Induction, but thats the limit with them, and you will still barely be able to hang with a Stock RSX Type-S.

The "EX" pistons have a higher compression hieght. You could buy some over sized factory pistons to get your compression up. As for the ECU the vtec activation also has more advanced timming, air/fuel maps, and a knock sensor to constantly advance/retard timming.

instead pistons I could just shave the head from more compression

I would just save the money that you would spend and buy myself a new car.
Although trickin a smaller car into something unimaginable would feel a lot better
rather than having a car with all the power.
