After calling a bunch of dealers about putting in a new gauge cluster, I was surprized by there responce. Nobody wonted to talk about it not even honda coprate. I told them I wanted to have the gauges changed legaly and have them do it. I've never heard so much tap danceing on the phone you think that I was a bill collector or somthing. All I wanted was a figuer on how much it would cost to have it done.

Well I'm thinking that the clusters have a eprom with milage stored on it. When the ecu sees a new cluster, the ecu rests it. Can't be that hard....

I heard Grey say that the odometer settings are kept in th ECU.

On my T/A I changed gauge clusters and it start with a new odometer. So I'm not sure if our cars are different like Grey says.

yes grey is correct. the mileage is stored in the ECU. the LCD on the cluster has a memory as well.. but it cannot easily be reset unless you are a small electronis genius. no matter what fuses you pull or how many times you plug it and disconnect, whatever mileage that has been recorded will remain. all you can do is have a notory sign the DVM paperwork stating your old cluster ending mileage, and the starting mileage on the new. and dont pay to have it installed. it takes only 15 min. start to finish. there are MANY thread in this topic. these clusters sell on ebay or your local junkyard for about 100 bucks used. 250 new from the dealer.

I'm thinking that ecu codes the cluster if the cluster is changed the ecu rests it. Thats inorder to prevent swapping. Now it would make sense that if you removed the eprom from your old cluster and put in the new one you would get the same milage.

The eprom could have some tag (set by the ecu at first factory start) in the data stream saying hi I'm mister 245345lx's cluster if the number matchs the ecu lets the clust go about its thing. On the other hand if you put the cluster with a different ecu the cluster again tells the new ecu same code the new ecu dosen't know this code and treats the cluster like its new...thus resetting it.

Your millage is stored in your ecu and ur cluster. If you replace ur cluster with a diffrent one, your correct millage will be stored in your ecu, however the millage on the clust that you swapped in will be displayed not the actually millage of your car.

Is there anyway that you could reset the cluster so that it will pick up the mileage from the ECU, is it like a computer where the BIOS info is saved on the board but if the battery is removed it is reset?, or is the mileage written to a ROM chip or something.
Just curious thats all.

i swaped out about a year ago, but i just did it myself. what will happen to me if i sell my car without saying anything? i also went fro KPH to MPH

A few months back i had to get my cluster replaced because the maint. light came on and could not be reset. After they did it my miles went down to 0. They put a sticker on the door jam that has the real miles though. Im sure it is documented too. But the point that im tring to make is if its stored in the ecu why did the miles go to 0 when all they replaced was the cluster.

I don't know how the gauge cluster and milage works and all that. And I'm not telling you to do anything illegal. It's just my experience when shops dance around the subject like that, then they do but won't say so on the phone. But will do it if I go in in person and ask they will.

That is correct....my gauge was swapped out since it broke....miles started over on the odometer....and Honda can hook up a computer and read the actual miles from the ECU
