CVT = continuously variable transmission. My friend somehow got one on his 99 ex. Basically, there are no real gears. The shifting is done by belts, which gives virtually an infinite number of "gears". I don't know about turbo for an auto, but they will be expensive anyway.

Basicly you have a belt drive and the two pulleys that the belt attaches to move to change the ratio between the pulleys.

You don't want to turbocharge a CVT transaxle. The belts will snap. They're not made to handle that much power. Unless you can find a way to beef up the belts, serious power adders like a turbo are a no-no. There is, however, a member that uses nitrous without any problems (yet) with his CVT.

Also, don't feel bad about having CVT. Compared to a normal automatic, the CVT is much quicker. You also have no torque coverter to worry about sapping power or dying.

If he's telling you he has an EX...he's lying. He has an HX (also VTEC). He might be confused because many believe the EX is the only Civic with VTEC. Therefore, he thinks that since his car has VTEC, he has an EX.

Actually... I heard that that was true with the first generation of CVT's. The ones in the 6th gens. The ones in the 7th gens are the newest generation and I hear that they can withstand about twice the power that they were intended to operate under. That's probably why the dude with the N2O is not having any problems.

Grey, it's still a problem with the 7th gen. Here's a recent quote:

Oh. Hmm... I guess they still have problems. Not bad that it doesn't just break on you with all those mods. I think the 6th gen ones were much more fragile.

bugsielo, you may be able to find more information at the HX club on Yahoo that I set up last year. The link is: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hondacivichxcvt. There are a bunch of links to sites that discuss the CVT or the HX in general. There is also a lot of discussion in the group on experiences with the CVT.
