our abs system....is it different?

well, last night we got a few inches of snow, so i put on my hat, gloves and went for a spirited drive in the extremly large parking lot we have here on campus. i was having tons of fun getting sideways, drifting and doing 180s...but i noticed something rather odd....it seems that our abs system monitors wheel lockup, even when NOT braking, unless it monitors use of the e-brake!?

upon pulling the e-brake to induce sideways action, i could clearly hear the abs monitor going ape-$hit trying to keep the wheels from locking, and as the car began to get sideways i could seem to feel the car trying to keep the front wheels from locking....after droping the e-brake back down it seemed as if the abs system continued to operate for a few moments

when i owned my 91 integra gs (which had abs) i dont recall the abs system trying to prevent wheel lockup when pulling the e-brake..

does our abs system constantly monitor wheel-lockup? or does it consider the e-brake as brake input...?

i think it was the e-brake...we have (ex anyways) 4 wheel abs and if you are locking up the rears with the e-brake then it will pulsate

The ABS is just doing its job, it senced that the rear wheels weren't turning but the fronts were so it tried to stop the rear wheels from locking up. I don't think that Honda engineers had in mind that people would be using thier parking brake for donuts.

my point is that abs is normally only supposed to work under braking conditions, and most abs system DO NOT monitor the use of the e-brake

a system like traction control constantly monitors wheel lock up and spin, and would compare front to rear wheel speeds, not a system like abs.....abs system should only individually monitor wheel lockup under BRAKING conditions.

i dont consider the use of the e-brake a "braking situation"...only pushing of the brake pedal, like in my integra

i know how i am going to figure this out

i will unhook the wire from the e-brake and see if it still monitors the lockup when i lock the rear wheels, that will determine if the abs system CONSTANTLY monitors wheel lockup, or just under breakin situations

If the ABS ingages without using the brakes than I guess its some type of traction control but I dought it. I would assume that when the parking brake is applied that the computer sences the rear brake pads are engaged when the car is moving and tries to stop the lock up. Seems to me though its kind of a waste of time to find out why the ABS works that way with the parking brake, because it wasn't designed to work under those conditions. I wouldn't wory about it and have some more fun doing donuts

i only worry about it because "if your pump was going nuts, you might foam the fluid, which can wreck the modulator if done enough"

again, stupidity of the 7th civic....i wish i had bought a gsr

I think there are sensors at the wheels that tells the ecu whether or not the wheels are spinning or not spinning...not spinning=locked brakes therefore causeing the abs to kick on.

seeing this is making me upset, i dont know, i make videos with my buddies and it clearly shows my rear locked up, maybe our drums are just a lil too weak or something, do a rear drum to disc conversion and i bet all your probs will go away (i didn't do it on mine but i guess i just pull it really hard) -lata
