Squeeling Noise, HELP...

Hey everyone, just recently, in the past few days, I have been hearing this strange noise and I know something is wrong with my 2k1 civic ex auto. I first noticed this noise on the freeway, with my windows up. It was a faint squeeling noise that only went on when I was going fast on the freeway. When I got off and went about 40mph in the past few days, the noise went away. I wasn't sure, but it sounded like it was coming from the front of my civic. Just tonite when I was driving on the streets with my windows down, I heard the noise again. This time, it occured at regular street speeds and was loud as hell. It was a loud squeeling noise and I didn't know where the hell it was coming from. The only thing that I can guess that this is coming from is one of my tires or something in the engine. When driving, it is very hard for me to pinpoint where the noise is coming from exactly. Could you all please help me. I don't know if it is safe to drive and the only time I can bring my car in is next week. Thanks!

not that i recall, it is pretty much constant through the cycling of the gears. I am starting to think that it may be the alternator bearing that came lose. I have been reading some posts and the symptoms seem to be very similar to what im experiencing.

Ok, just got back driving with my friend and I think we have found the source of the noise. The extremely loud squealing noise is coming from the passenger side front wheel. I was just idling in drive while my friend walked beside my car and you could easily tell. Now the question is what is causing the noise? That wheel is the wheel that i usually curb accidently when parking beside my house so could it be a blown bering or something?

Hmmm, try this...put the car in P and listen for the noise...then put it in D and listen again. Is it always there, or is it only while in D?

I already know what the noise is. The brake pad on that side is worn down. On most new cars, when the brake gets very worn, to signal that it is time to get new brakes, there is a little metal strip that comes in contact with the disc and makes that noise that I am hearing. I took off my tire and there was barely any pad left, so I will get new ones tomorrow.
