wesson, that probably true,i know modern day engine tend to use oil a bit more but to a certain degree,.put a large piece of cardboard under the engine after it has been runnin to check for leak,if none, assume the particular engine 7grev has indeed use more oil,i believe half of a qt in 3,4 k miles is normal.

vtec doesn't use oil....just people that abuse the vtec to the point of ring breakdown causes vtec to use oil.......
this is a an old world technique of used car salepeople handed down for the long haul...."keep it secret, keep it safe".....
if you're car is burning light amounts of oil....puffs of blue here and there but not a steady stream like a locomotive...just drain the oil (don't replace the oil filter) and add 1 quart of automatic transmission fluid and fill the rest with 20weight oil....
the transmission fluid is nothing more than an extreme detergent inside the engine and will free up the quickly frozen rings....drive the car good an hard (not TOO hard) for either a week, daily or for about 500 miles then completely drain the fluid, change the oil (use cheap filter and oil...run another 100 miles or so to finish flushing out the transmission fluid...then change back to normal nice quality oil and filter and you should be golden unless cylinder wear was way too much or the rings were definitely toast.....this will tell you if you've got a serious problem about to happen to your car or not in a cheaper way than any mechanic can....
sure they can do a compression test on a dead cylinder with bad rings......but if you can free those rings for $35 dollars in your own time and not spend $500-1000 getting the engine rebuilt/replaced...why not.....
take this info for what it's worth....
