Ok now i understand it better, yes your vtec will still work even when the mtnce. reqd light is on.
Depending on the problem with the car it will still work with the check engine light on

Well... Wait, your friend may be right. I hear that if some serious problem occurs the ECU will set the car to "safe mode". The rpm limiter will be lower. VTEC will not engage. A certain combustion chamber may be "turned off". Anything to put less strain on the engine, but still allow you to drive it to a mechanic. I'm not sure what our cars do in particular, but the things mentioned above are possible.
When I went to my dealer about my maint req. light the senior mechanic told me that the light did nothing more than count miles. It acts as a reminder to get your oil changed etc. And you don't have to take your car to the dealer to turn it off. You can do it yourself in about 10 seconds. Read your owners manual to find out how.

ya your vtec will still work but not to 100%, our cars electronics are soo sensitive everything has to be in order for 100% performance. if you dont have your oil changed reg. its gonna lower your performance on vtec control boost[hr]

"Main't Req" (Maintenance Required) light blinks / is constantly on
worked for me in two separate occasions.
1: Insert key in igniton (don't turn it)
2: Push & hold the trip odometer rod/pin/button.
3: Turn the key until the dash lights all come on (don't start the engine)
4: Hold it until the Maint Reqd light shuts off.
5: Turn the key off and take your finger off the button.
