hard downshifting feel (automatic)

Every now and then my '02 Sedan EX (Automatic) seems to downshift kind of roughly when im coming to a stop. is this normal?

???? More Details....that is like saying my car rides rough on the road what's wrong?? Like whether you hear any noises etc....

mine does the same thing. long time ago i was told it was normal so i wouldnt worry about it. like, when i get off the interstate and have to brake, it'll downshift and the car will lunge a little bit, but from what i was told, no biggy

It could be because of the ABS.The brakes dont lock on ABS.

Yeah, that's your brakes nothing to do with the engine. Its normal.

I have the same occurence on my car, and from my understanding it is Honda's Grade Logic automatic transmission. The transmission can sense inclines/declines and responds to that.

For instance, when your accelerating up an incline, the transmission will hold the gear longer. Conversely, when you are slowing down a decline, the transmission will downshift (engine braking) like you would on a manual transmission to help slow the car down.

Yes,u're right Klam that what it is.The only problem with the engine braking is that it's very abrupt and the passengers can feel the jerk everytime the gear downshifts.I hope this answers your question Fern...your car is ok just make sure the rough downshift only occurs when you're going down a decline otherwise u shouldn't feel the gear downshifts on a straight normal road.
