Junkyard Turbo
i went to a junkyard with my friend (he needed a small fusebox for some accessories in his '87 wrangler) last week, and searched the whole damn place for a turbo considering they only charge $25.00 for the turbo, and $15 for an intercooler, everyone else beat me to it and i found nothing. anyways, there's plenty more junkyards around, i just have to do more searching. since i know there's a bunch more of you out there looking in to doing the same thing, let's come up with a list of cars that do have turbos to make the search a bit easier, and hopefully one of us can find the parts and eventually make this a DIY
Common mid-80s to early-90s junkyard cars with standard or optional turbo...
83-8x Audi Quattro
83-9x Saab 900
81-8x Volvo 240
84-9x Volvo 740/760
88-93 Volvo 940
87-89 Dodge Caravan/Plymouth Voyager
87-90 Dodge Shadow/Plymouth Sundance
90-99 Mitsubishi Eclipse/Eagle Talon
87-90 Chrysler Lebaron
83-88 Ford Thunderbird
84-8x Dodge Daytona
83-88 Mercury Cougar
84-88 Chrysler New Yorker/Dodge 600
if you know of any other late 80's cars that had turbos, add 'em to the list!

The junkyard down by me has some turbos still on the cars. you just gotta look. most people attack the better looking crapped out cars. try lookin in the ones that are total wrecks. a friend of mine got a used turbo from a saab 900 for his saab not too long ago. i guess you just have to look really hard. only thing that sucks is that w/o a ton of turbo knowledge or crackin one open you cant really tell if they're fried. that was the problem on the mid 80's saabs. they wore out fast and basically cooked themselves to well done in their own oil. My advice would be to see what 80's turbocharged cars had good turbo reliability. as for saabs, stay away from their turbo's unless its a 1989 or later cause they were water cooled, not oil cooled.
i'd try to avoid the DSM turbos, especially the 1g ones. the volvo turbos are very durable - they last at least 200k miles if taken care of
out of curiosity - what are you gonna put the turbo on?

Just in case you people are wondering...those saab 900s come with garrett T3's. I have no idea what the ratios are, all I know is that they are T3s. There is a website somewhere that let's you search junkyards across the country and you can get parts shipped to you. Can't remember the name though....search for junkyard search engine on yahoo or something.
