Help! I think I F'd up bad!
I got on the highway and took it to the top of 3rd gear and accidentally shifted back to second instead of fourth going like 85. my rpms burried in the redline for an instant untill I realized and engaged the clutch. The car seemed fine but as I exited the highway, the car died on the exit ramp. every tme i tried to restart it, it would run rough as heII when given a little gas but would click and eventually die if it didnt receive any more gas. we pushed it back a little and discovered that a asmall amount pf oil had leaked. we then pushed it to a nearby shop. what did I do? is it transmission related? head related? block related? help! thanks in advance!

MY friend did that when he was spraying he was going to go into 4th and ended shifting to 2nd and redlined it and is now in the process of having to rebuild the motor...i dont think it would be just the tranny you fugged up it goes much deeper than that and since it kept dying that would indicate more than a fugged up tranny sorry to hear that
SHOULD'VE is the key word. if it actually did is another question. as for the problem, if ur engine is runnin rough now, id place a good bet that u prolly did a bit of damage. if it was only a short, temporary malfunction, id say u just confused the hell out of ur engine/ecu and it will prolly be fine. definite dont keep runnin ur engine if its runnin rough like that tho, cuz thats just diggin ur ditch deeper if u do.
The rev limiter would have done nothing for you.
In the case of driving, you may forget to shift up. The rev limiter will slow down the timing, cut the ignition, and lower the fuel input. This will keep the engine from going higher.
What you did was this. The engine was already at or near redline. You then had a moving vehicle and shifted down. The vehicle's speed reversed back into the transmission and turned the motor even faster.
So the motor ended up going much farther past redline than it was supposed to do. The fact that it no longer runs is a big indicator that you should have it towed to the Honda shop. The bad news is that they may not cover this under warranty, but they might.
Good luck, and I hope it is not too bad.

a friend of mine did that with his wrangler last year. But he didn't blow the engine, he locked up the wheels and flipped it shifting from 4th to 1st by accident. who does that!? So i guess you could consider yourself somewhat lucky that didnt happen, but it still sucks that your car is probably really messed up. im sure honda should cover that. but the key word is should, you're probably gonna have to fight. It seems that everything ive taken my car in for has ended in a fight over the warranty coverage.
well so you dont feel so bad i did this very same thing only i didnt fully disengagee the clutch but it was still enough to bury the needle and bark the tires, it ran normal after i did it but took it to the dealership anyway they checked it and said evrything was fine... this was about 5000 miles ago and nothing has happened since so good luck and pray that it was just your ecu getting confused
have no idea my buddy did the same thing to his car and it shut down complelty died and choked... the weird thing about your story is the whold oil leak that intrigues me. . my friends car did not do that let us know

ouch, so sorry to hear that.... i did almost the same thing once but what happened was i was shifting normally (at 2500rpm) so going from 3rd to 2nd really wasn't that bad for me, it hit 6k, but good thing i wasn't gunning it or anything... well good luck on getting your car back on the road...

With rwd up around redline the compression is enough to lock up the rear tires.
But in a fwd car you are f'd.
Don't tell them what you did, just say you were on the highway and heard a loud pop.

i went from 3rd to 2nd once late at night i slowed down for the highway to clear up infront of me and went for it right? well it got to the top of 3rd and instead of slammin it into 4th i somehow got it to 2nd. im not sure how long my reaction time was and how far the clutch was and all but DAMN! the whole car leaned forwards like if you were to slam on the brakes and i swear i saw some sparks out of the corner of my eye on the passenger side! after all that i got it back into gear and all seemed to be ok so i took off again.... but not quite as hard as i was since i was scared to deat as to what i might have done. all still seems fine, except that its in the shop since some idiot tryed to pass me on the left on a 2 lane WHILE I WAS MAKING A LEFT TURN. sorry had to vent.

Here's one for ya: One night while I'm driving down a busy road, my wife starts choking on something (no, it wasn't THAT). I'm trying to pull over as fast as I can because I think she's about to throw up, but she apparently couldn't breathe and wanted me to stop right away. So, in a panic, she reaches down and shifts me from Drive to Park at 50 fvckin' miles per hour!!!!! All I heard was SCRAPING . . . I immediately shifted back into drive and damn near got hit pulling over. While she hops out of the car and throws up, I hop out and pop my hood, smelling smoke and close to tears . . . had no further problems, at least for about a year, then I get a check engine light this past February, and when I take it in they tell me I need a new transmission. Coincidence? I think not. Thank GOD for the Hondacare extended warrenty.

I did that the other day. I was getting on the freeway and I wasn't really paying attention and was being lazy and I accidentally flipped it from third into second instead of fourth. I was only at about forty five when I tried shifting it though. The RPM's went up to about 6 and a half but only for like half a second and I put it back in neutral until I caught my breath. Everything's been fine since then.
hey man..
why would you care..
dont you have a hondacare extandent warranty???
i keep my rpm high all the time 5000-6000 and redline ...and i hade my civic for a year and no problem so far..

I just had a similar experience today...I was going in 5th, went to neutral because traffic was slowing on the freeway and when it picked up, I tried to go back to 5th but went into 3rd. Heard the loud rev, got freaked, went back to neutral, tried to go to 4th, but went to 2nd...the worst fug-up ever with my car. I then remembered reading flex's post about his car dying so I pulled off the freeway to test it out, seems fine to me, but I'm on here now trying to find some comforting words.
