Chrome gauge rings
I got my 4 chrome gauge rings from terrshop but there are no instructions. I know how to open the dash, not a problem. But I am not sure how to adhere them. There is a bead of black rubbery adhesive in the grove on the back side of the ring. Should I just use that? The rings actually came adhered on a glossy piece of white cardboard. Anybody done this yet? The black goo just looks so messy, I wonder if that is really intended for application.

Yea, i got teh same thing, Use the goo, but make sure you press it up inside the groove of the rings first. The first time i put them on i didnt, and the goo will show from teh back a bit at certain places. That stuff will hold like a soft putty. Thats what its there for.
edit: yea, its kinda messy, but these rings are meant as a somewhat permanenet application. They are the same rings that are used on other applications for different vehicle manufacturers. A lot of car companies are now putting chrome trim rings around their gauges. I wouldnt doubt that the next run of civics will have it from teh factory considering the shape and style of our dash. I think someone mentioned that either the hybrid, or Si already has teh rings in some places in the conrty or something....

In my opinion I just think that the entire face plate on our dash just looks tacky. teh rings bring out the detail and almost give our dash a somewhat "aftermarket" gauge look.

OK... I just finished installing the rings. Took about an hour. I guess the DIY for the gauge inserts is good enough. I used the shop manual. Anyway, you DO have to push that black bead in, otherwise when you apply pressure it comes out the edges. What i did was I took an Xacto knife and VERY GENTLY went around the edge to trim off any of the black rubebry adhesive. It worked like a charm and they look SHARP! The best interior mod I've done to my car. Plus I got an extra 12 hp at the wheels!
On a side note, I'm glad I didn't get the chrome insert as well. I think it would have been overkill, and very ricey. But that's my opinion.
Oh... Also, make sure you wipe down everything before you reassemble otherwise you'll end up with fingerprints and it's kind of a pain to disassemble everything just for that.

I agree on just using the rings. Well, if I can get my nerve up to pull the dash apart I'll give this mod a try. Which DIY did you use to remove the dash to get to the gauges?

The DIY is really pretty simple.
First: Remove the upper and lower steering column covers. (3) screws hold this together from the bottom. You may need to slightly pry the pieces apart, but very gently. Also, make sure the steering column lever is down (unlocked).
Second: Remove the dash insert. This is held by (2) screws and some clips. The srews are at the top and openly visible. When the screws are removed, just pull gently from the bottom, and you might need to pry it down from the top. All of this should come apart fairly easily.
Third: After this, the gauge cluster should be clearly exposed. Remove the (3) screws that hold the cluster in place. Then, unplug the wire harness from the cluster. Now, you have the cluster completely removed.
Fourth: Remove the clear plastic cover from the cluster. This is held by 6 or so clips which are clearly visible and very easy to unclip. Now you have the exposed gauge cluster.
Fifth: Gently push the black bead in the chrome rings as deep into the bead as possible. Then simply place the rings on the gauges and press firmly. If any of the black adhesive runs out, VERY CAREFULLY AND GENTLY run a razor or Xacto along the rim. Take care not to rush or your blade might slip and scratch the surrounding plastic.
Press the rings securely in place. Once there, they should be permanently attached, and not easily removed.
Six: Wipe everything down, and take care not to touch the needles. Reassemble. You're done!
