spare under tire...again....

you guys do too much work (gets more publicity if its its own topic, thats why its here)

drill a hole the size of the stock bolt, if you have stock suspension, doesnt matter where, mine is in the center.

go buy a lock nut and a 1 inch washer, and just thread it back through. simple. took me 10 minutes to do, and driving over speedbumps has had no effect on it whatsoever. works great on a civic with stock springs.

What did you use for the bolt part? some threaded rod?? if so, how long? and if not what did you use? Also, how did you conncect the tire to it on the underside of the car. Sorry for all the questions, I just want to be sure before i do anyhthing. Thanks

i was thinking about that, actually. i think its rock solid, but if anyone has done this DIY and used another bolt, can you send me the stock one? I have access to a tensile tester, and might be able to persuade my professors into letting me run a tensile test of the stock bolt and the nut I bought. I would be able to get a fail stress, and let you all know how much force it took to break it....

but its a destructive test, so whoever loans me teh bolt can kiss it goodbye.....

Decamo has a little shameless behaviour in the past
I don't think thats gonna be able to handle the spare tire. That bolt in the pic could come loose. Did you put thread lock on it or something? At least put a second bolt to prevent the first from comming undone.

I was thinking the same thing. Either a lock washer or an extra nut would work okay.

I think this method would work just fine, I was thinking of doing it to my ride. Only problem being if something is high enough to catch that tire. You'll seriously bend up your trunk floor and lose the tire. Also watch for rust around that freshly drilled hole.

its a lock nut, its not gonna come loose

my only worry is ground clearance, which ive driven around the parking lot for awhile at various speeds to test when i first did it.
it passes teh speedbump test, well see if it can hold for everything else.

and I will repeat, if anyone has a spare stock threaded rod, I will tensile test it with teh nut to see where failure occurs, and we will know for sure whether this is or is not enough to hold up teh spare!
