Spoiler and brake lights fubar'd my gear shift
Spoiler and brake lights fubar'd my gear shift
So my spoiler finally broke completely off, hanging only by the brake light wire that goes inside the spoiler itself. I cannot fix the spoiler right now, so I cut the two wires and taped them off. I'm sure some of you guessed that this disabled my gear shift and borked my brake lights. I then tried to connect the two wires that were cut, trying to complete the circuit, but no luck. I can manually unlock my gear shift, but I want to fix the problem with the lights. How can I fix the brake lights and gear shift lock without putting a new spoiler back on?

correct terminology > you.
u need to clarafy what ur talking bout cuz all i see is a mumbo jumbo of words.
so u cut off ur spoiler that has ur tail light?
and now ur gear shift is disabled? what gear shift? u cant get ur car out of parked?
cutting ur 3rd brake light should not affect anything. unless u shorted is, which seems like u did, and that would be a fuse problem....but no "gear shift" problem should occur, whatever the heck that is.

Re: Spoiler and brake lights fubar'd my gear shift
Wait.. Why would you wait for your spoiler to effectively rip itself off before you did anything about it? Just curious..
Re: Spoiler and brake lights fubar'd my gear shift
Your spoiler fell off? I sense water issues in your trunk unless you duct taped the bolt holes... which by the way... is classy. So you see a guy driving down the road with duct tape on his spoiler holes with a red face from smashing his car into gear and wires hanging out the back that are taped together. That's even more classy.

Re: Spoiler and brake lights fubar'd my gear shift
Unless there's some sort of interlock I don't know about with the gearshift and the third brake light that, when there's no indicated load on the third brake light, it disables your gearshift locking mechanism, but that just sounds silly..

2002 civic, automatic transmission
Bought used car, spoiler was loose. Spoiler became so loose that I had to remove it. There were two wires leading from trunk to spoiler. I cut wires to completely remove loose spoiler. I taped off the wires with electrical tape.
After this my car will not shift out of park. I have to engage manual release of the gear shift and shift it into drive.
Removing the spoiler with the third brake light inside has locked the car into park and it cannot be shifted into drive without using the manual release that is located to the left of the gear shift.
I too am guessing that this has probably blown a fuse. When it is daylight tomorrow, I will be able to check and verify.
My dilemma is:
I cannot reattach the spoiler. Bottom line. How do I ensure that the lack of the third brake light in the spoiler does not continuously lock the car in park? I have two wires that used to lead to where the third brake light used to be in the spoiler. What do I do with them?

Re: Spoiler and brake lights fubar'd my gear shift
Ok, let me rephrase and make it super clear. Re-attach the wires TO THE LIGHT IN THE SPOILER (not to each other), check to see if it works, then throw it in the trunk. Better yet, crack the spoiler open, extract the light, re-attach the wires to the light, then zip tie it in the trunk out of the way. There, is that clear enough for ya. Jeez!

With names like sl33pyriceboi, one would think you might know a bit about Honda's... especially in a Civic forum. You truly seem too stupefied to be able to display any considerable amount of input on this subject.
You did put forth a bit of time to say that I was "inferior to correct terminology"... whatever that means. My only guess is that you meant that I am not familiar with the proper terminology. Either way my misuse of automobile terminology is in no comparison to the English language deficit that you are currently facing. I count no less than 10 grammatical and spelling errors in your first post, not to mention your followup post.
To the rest of you, Thanks! Especially xRiCeBoYx. I am glad he and tbohar could get a good laugh out of this one. Even lazlong's advice was at least constructive
sl33pyriceboi, the next time you see a "mumbo jumbo" of English words... stop. Count to 10. Maybe 20. Re-read the words. If you are still having problems, remember that the problem of comprehension may be due to your own shortcomings.

I purchased the car used recently and shortly afterwards noticed that the spoiler had been glued on. Once the glue broke, and I could see under the spoiler near the bolts, I noticed everything was cracked and damaged too much to repair.
Without the means to replace the spoiler with a new one, my only option was to remove it. I mean, I can't have a dangling spoiler now can I? I am sure you would like to her that I wanted to duct tape the spoiler down to the trunk. Then you could have even more lols as you spend your life in a Civic forum. I am sorry, but this is not the case. I was trying to avoid the trashy look as much as possible.
So please tell me, master of all common sense and Civic forum guru, what should have been my brilliant course of action here?

Re: Spoiler and brake lights fubar'd my gear shift
The 2 wires disconnected & isolated from each other and from ground will not affect the interlocks operation.
If they were connected together the fuse would blow when you stepped on the brakes. A short.
Isolate each wire separately with electrical tape and check the fuse, If the fuse is blown your horn will not work either.

So, Mr. tbohar, beholder of grand advice on a Civic help forum, what would you suggest I do?

Well, I never claimed to be master of common sense, or a civic forum guru. Your first post made it sound like you were literally waiting for the spoiler to fall off and did nothing about it, also why did you cut the wires... is there not a harness you could have simply disconnected? If you had watched your wording like in your latter post you would have been okay. Over the internet it is often hard to interpret the message people are trying to relay so you have to be very careful how you write everything. Partially my fault for being an ***, partially your fault for being very vague in your first post. As far as being a sociopath or a ricer fan, WTF? If you had done your research even a little bit you will notice that I have no modifications at all done to my car, nor have I ever encouraged any kind of ricer modification on this forum. I am definitely no sociopath
Which makes you as much of a ricer fan as I am, just because you own a civic. All your being is a stereotypical jackass which I don't condone at all. Also, take a joke... yo. You will live longer
Temporarily put the spoiler back and and reattach the two wires. Check all your fuses and relays to make sure everything is okay. Then check to see if your gear shift is working properly. If it is not, you may have some further issues.
Once you have everything back in order. Go to this website and order yourself a new trunk lid. Get it painted, and you will have a complete car again. Now you can order a trunk with no spoiler if you like. It's up to you

Re: Spoiler and brake lights fubar'd my gear shift
Thanks, Craig.
The fuse did in fact blow, and the two wires were separated and isolated from each other at the time that it blew. I have traced the wires to make sure that no copper became exposed while removing the spoiler and they look good.
For the time being, I have reattached the wires to the spoiler and thrown the spoiler in the trunk. I cant keep the spoiler in the trunk forever though
I hope I don't have to pry open the spoiler just to connect the third brake light to these wires indefinitely :P

Hmm... I would try to find the harness for the spoiler. There has to be a plug somewhere. If it's before where you cut the wires you might just simply be able to disconnect it. But then it's an open circuit, same as if you had the wires taped off. I think the spoiler lights are just a string of LEDs (I'm not 100% sure about this), so you might be able to just go and buy some LEDS and hook them up inside your trunk. That's if you absolutely have to have it hooked up, which really does not make a lot of sense? At least that way you can save your spoiler.
300 dollars for a new trunk lid: This one is for an 05 coupe, so you may need to switch which car its for.
