EGR help

After scrubbing and cleaning, my EGR light (P0401) is still on and I have a few questions concerning the EGR system.

Firstly, I drive a manual 2005 honda civic LX (d17a1) and I live in canada (vancouver). Does this engine come with an EGR as standard? I've read that EGR valves are only on the EX models?

Second, I'm not sure if the used car guys I bought it from did an engine swap since mine has an EGR valve, is it possible that it is simply due to the fact that they didn't swap gaskets on the intake side? As per this thread,

https://www.civicforums.com/forums/3...0401-code.html

Any input is welcome

Thanks,
Laurent

Re: EGR help

04-05 civic all have egr valves. I just pulled up the drawing that has the EGR valve and it lists it for your car (2005 civic lx manual)

However, I don't know what's going on with your situation. You could have some blockages in piping connected to the EGR

Re: EGR help

yeah only some model of 01-03 civic did not have the valve. and yes an old gasket could sometimes cause air leaks and that will be a problem. honda manual recommends changing the intake mani gasket each time its removed since it is a "crush" gasket. i have a similar issue with the header gasket i was forced to reuse since the new one i got was bent during shipping. i reused the old one and now there is a slight exhaust leak when the car is cold. still need to take that apart again and redo with new gasket. do you hear any hissing or other noises under the hood when you first start the car? a small air leak will cause the egr to read less flow.

Re: EGR help

Thanks for the replies. Glad I've got that cleared up

No I don't hear any hissing noises and I sprayed some carb cleaner around the intake manifold and there didn't seem to be a change in idle.

Well I didn't take of the intake manifold or head to scrub the passages leading into the manifold. Is it possible to take off the intake manifold off myself and clean it? Then buy a new gasket from honda and put it together?

Is there a guide for taking of the intake manifold? I couldn't seem to find one

Thanks again!

Re: EGR help

you should be able to unbolt the intake mani without too much trouble, but some of the bolts are hard to reach. you may need a small/short socket wrench. but since our manifold is plastic, i dont think traditional cleaning methods will work. you may be better off with a new one. im not exactly sure where all the passages go for the egr system, but most would seem to be in the cylinder head. and thats alot more work to remove, altho a machine shop can clean it all up for you nicely by hot-tanking it.

Re: EGR help

Hmm okay I think I'll give it to the machine shop. How much would it cost? I talked to one of the mechanics he said 4-5 hours of labour so around 500$? does that seem about right?

If I do take of the intake manifold would I be able to reach the egr passages with a small scrub?
