Newb w/Questions
I know everyone hates a newb.
Anyway, I got my hands on an 02 Civic 5-speed for $600 with a blown motor. It came a nice set of chrome 17's on it, projector headlights and catback. I'm a Ford guy so its all new to me. I know this is a loaded question but what should I be looking for to know exactly what "blown" means about the engine. I haven't had the car delivered to my house yet so I didnt have a chance to turn it over and see what its doing.
Is there something specific these cars are notorious for happening when the motor goes. Thanks for the help.
I am sure once I have an idea "search" will be my friend

Re: Newb w/Questions
There is no clue how the engine got blown. There could be alot of ways it could. I would probably say the last owner ran it to hard like a jackass and threw a valve or something like that. But since you got it for 600 then its time for a big swap.

Re: Newb w/Questions
Lol, and a dumba... who didnt know anything about cars would sell it for $600
Could even be a blown piston, bent rod, anything and everything
but like 02 said, since u got it for $600, get ready to spend a bit of $$ for an engine swap

Re: Newb w/Questions
not necessarily an engine swap, but you can prolly find a new engine with low mileage for cheaper than parts rebuild to block..
Maybe the engine's hamster just died..

Thanks for the help, I kind of figured it wasnt going to be that clean cut. Whats the easiest or should I say the best direct swap other than the same motor?

No it is not a direct swap there is alot of things you will need to swap a k series in your car but it would be alot easier and better than a b series. There is alot of forums around that has all the info that you will need but we can also help you the best we can.

Lol.. Ok. just making sure you didn't have any info making a b-series an easier swap than a k.
here's pretty much the DIY guide to a k-swap

I knew that when he stated it had a Vortech motor and 4 speed. I almost ended up butt nekkit in trying to get the money out of my pocket so fast.
Thanks for the help, I kind of figured it wasnt going to be that clean cut. Whats the easiest or should I say the best direct swap other than the same motor?

Re: Newb w/Questions
swapping might be ok. you might end up getting great performance out of this. plus a few extra upgrades would make it a real performer or if you want a daily driver still stick to the basic upgrades. did a few on a 96 civic and the overall benefits were great.

Re: Newb w/Questions
You can fit a CRV engine into the 7th gen?
Holy mother, thats like a 2.4L gas guzzler isnt it?
1.7 127HP - 2.4 160HP seems like a bad tradeoff to me, but whatever...
(oh yeah, assuming that it's an EX)
Just imagining how to possibly put that monster in that...
I have a 05 CRV, intake and exhaust are all reversed sides
Hate to find out how much labor to put it in

Re: Newb w/Questions
yes, people have swapped K24 engines into the EM2 chassis
Some people also have done the k-series frankenstein (k24 engine with a k20 head)

they seem to have gotten it swapped for 3,500 less than a K20
Ah, we don't hate newbies, we hate stupidy ones, especially the ones that think they have a vortec under the hood like the one that sold it to you!

Re: Newb w/Questions
People usually use the K24 found in the TSX (K24A2, 200HP) instead of the CRV one (K24A1, 160HP)
Also, keep in mind the Civic weighs a ton less (no **** 2000lbs, not figuratively speaking, lol) than the CR-V

Re: Newb w/Questions
Yeah, TSX is more of a reasonable swap to me, instead of CRV engine,
127-160 is not a huge jump, a simple CIA and decent exhaust will bump it closer to 160 already
I was only tripping out because I was doing oil change on my CRV yesterday, and was noticing how large the engine was, then i saw the post, and i was like "you can fit that...into that tight space in the civic?" (get your minds out of the gutters)

Re: Newb w/Questions
The 127 is at the flywheel/crank. There's tranny losses and whatnot to take into account. Even the 200hp the k24a2 is rated at prolly makes 180 at the wheels.
Re: Newb w/Questions
Noone ever takes into the concept that the specs you see on these sites are just the crank power. There is a 15% loss of power thru the tranni. For an example some people would say my car has 300 hp and its stock lol no you dont you would have bout 255 cause the whp is what counts. Then they are like no dude I have 300 and I say well go get it dynoed and then come tell me if it has that much. Besides I have the k20a3 and its rated 160 hp and I have I/RH/E and a tune and I am running 169 whp.
The k24a2 is the preferred swap of the k24's but its a bit pricey. So the cheaper route is the k24a1. And what everyone does is swap in the tsx head parts in the k24a1 which are pretty cheap and it gains alot power. With just bolt ons and a tune with the tsx cams, rocker arms etc etc the k24a1 will be pushing 210 or more to the wheels which will be the same as k24a2. Plus the k24a1 is turbo ready because it has the lowest compression of the k24's and can handle up to bout maybe 12-15 psi stock internals. The k24a2 is not recommended to boost on stock internals.

Re: Newb w/Questions
I took a gander at the specs before I posted about the k24a1/a2. The k24a1 has a lower compression ratio than the d17a2 (9.6:1 vs the d17a2's 9.9:1).
