I need some help on this one... i was able to limp along with everything else and figure it out, but this one has me beat. I have the axle shaft in and put everything back together, but there is a slow leak comming from the differential oil seal (a guess from reading others threads).

if i can manage to find one at the dealership, how do i install it? how do i remove the old one?

Are U absolutely sure U got the shaft all the way in where the little locking ring is engaged in the groove inside & you can't just pull the shaft back out? Cuz the seal aint gonna seal if it's riding on the splines at all. If the seal is messed up it won't be at all fun replacing it in there.

yeah unfortunately replacing the seal is a huge hassle. everythings gotta come apart again.

hb.. i un-installed it again this morning and it took the same amount of force on a pry bar to get it out as the original one. when installed there is about 1/8-1/4 gap between the inner joint, leaning more to the 1/4"

does anyone have a picture of what i would be trying to replace? what additionally has to come out to get the seal compared to the axle shaft process? what tools do i need? how do i get the old out an dnew in?

are there any pictures of how the gap that you know of floating around the forum? i would like to compare them to what i have.. I didnt think to take a picture before removing the first one..

on my 96 the cv joint is 4-5mm from the differential case. http://www.bkhondaparts.com/billkay/...p=Transmission I've never done this particular seal but it might come right out with a small slide hammer - I wouldn't try prying it out cuz a bearing's right behind.

I picked up a cheaper seal from autozone, how deep should it be set in when installed? the old one was pushed all the way back, but im not sure if it should be back there or a little closer up.

Forget about the gap, it's not important. What is important is that the axles locks in place. If you can pull it out by hand, it's not in place. If you pry it with a screw driver and it feels like it unseated, that means it was in place. It's common sense weather it's in place or not. Use the rotor assembly connected to the axle to batter the axles into the trany. Not too harsh!

If they are in, and it's still dripping, that means you need new seals. Perhaps your old seals simply don't have grease inside the grease channel, and/or they are old. I would just replace them with new ones. All you need is a flathead screw driver to pry them out, and a rubber mallet to put them in. Be careful because on of the two seals can be hammered in too far.

One seal will go in a certain amount because there is a step behind it, but the other one doesn't have a step. Just use common sense and push it in an appropriate amount. Make sure there is grease in the inner seal channels. If not, add.

Thanks mang, just seems too simple after working on aircraft including overhauling a shitload of gearboxes among other components. If U could just pry out a seal w/ a screwdriver something was ****ed up.
