manual trans refil

I dont know what i am screwing up here, but i could use a little help. I replaced the axle shaft this afternoon and drained the fluid. I cant feel any in the check plug anymore, but when i pour fluid back in through the check hole (funnel + hose) it pours right back out. Am i missing something here? am i pouring into the wrong place?

how much gap is left between the inboard end of the drive shaft and the differential. I didnt take note how much was originally was there, but now it seems to be about 1/4 -1/2 cm on the generous side..

On this picture (what mine is) #12 at the very bottom is the square-drive drain plug. #17 just aft of the cv joint is the check/ fill bolt. No other square-drive ones on mine. The cv joint is about 4 or 5 mm away from differential case.
