Trying to replace right CV axle (Please help)
Trying to replace right CV axle (Please help)
Here is my scenario...
Car: 2001 Honda Civic EX coupe with a manual transmission and with ABS.
Job: Replace worn right/passenger CV axle.
I bought a new CV at Napa and began disassembling the right front wheel to remove the damaged axle. I took off the hub assembly, removed the hub assembly from the axle and moved to taking the inner side of the axle apart from the transmission. This is where I am stuck. Everywhere that I have read, it says to just pry the axle from the transmission housing, but I think that the axle is held in by a ring clip on the inner axle stub (inside the tranny). Am I wrong?
I've tried prying it, and it seems to be requiring a lot more force than I would suspect, so I quit that and came inside the house and got on the computer to make sure that I do this correctly.
Can you please help me out?

Man, you went about getting the axle out the wrong way. I'm sure you don't want to hear it now, but the easiest way is to unbolt the brake line brackets from the strut shackle, take the axle spindle nut off, remove the two large strut shackle bolts from the top of the spindle, and then swing the whole spindle down and remove the axle from the hub.
Now on to your axle question. Make sure the transmission is in neutral and use a pry bar in between the transmission and the axle and pop it out. It shouldn't take too much effort to get it out. If you are running into some serious pry bar flex then you might have bigger problems that will require removing the tranny and taking it to someone. Occasionally the axle will get stuck in the case and you will need a professional to help you remove it. This does not happen very often and is usually indicative of more serious tranny problems.
Oh, make sure you've drained the transmission or things get a little messy.

Yeah, there is a clip there usually, but it should collapse as you pry it out. Sometimes they pop right out , and sometimes they take more coercing than you thought it would.
