Re: Power Steering Fluid

just drain and fill, but usually the fluid lasts a long time. should only need changing if fluid is dark.

Re: Power Steering Fluid

I checked into this a while back (it is the only fluid left I have not had changed) Mine seems dark.

The manual talks about taking a line loose and running the engine with it disconnected and catch the old fluid. It mentions turning the steering wheel back and forth to get the fluid out. To me it sounds scary running it with low fluid.

Re: Power Steering Fluid

yeah that and its not good to keep the wheel turned to out side for more than a second. idk, i havent changed mine and its been almost 90k miles. what you could do is just siphon out the fluid in the reservoir and add new fluid. then let it mix and look at it again. if its still black, repeat the process again. that way theres no harm to the system.

Re: Power Steering Fluid

You need 3 people for this. Disconnect the line from the power steering just like it says in the manual. Jack the car and put it on 2 jack stands. Start the engine.
One person checks at the end of the line when the old (dirty fluid) is out. The 2nd person pours continuously NEW fluid into the reservoir so the steering system will never be low on fluid (make sure you have several botles of steering fluid ready right there!!! The 3rd person steers the wheel from left to right several times until the first person will see CLEAR fluid running trough the line. Then you stop the engine and the entire fluid is CLEAN

Hope it help.

Re: Power Steering Fluid

well you could run the car and then use a turkey baster and suck out some old fluid then re fill it and then turn the wheels a few times. repeat that sequence a few times till the fluid looks cleaner. every time you turn the car to full lock give it a few little nudges against the lock this helps get that nasty fluid out of the lines and then when you get back to the turkey baster at the resivior it should be a little darker (dirty) just suck it out and do it all over again. i do this every day. and honda says to change the fluid every 30k it is oil based and anything oil based breaks down and needs to be changed.

I never flush the fluids from the Honda. In the entire manual I have never seen a mention about flushing. For the transmission Honda recommends NOT to flush your transmission. So, trough deduction, flushing is not good for our cars (including the power steering). I don't know how others are build......

The Power Steering Fluid is around $6-7 at the dealer and it comes in 250 ml grey bottles (I think it's 5-6 oz or aprox 1/4 of a quart). I usually get 4 bottles just to have them handy.

Re: Power Steering Fluid

Had mine done today, new fluid is dark as well. It was the last fluid left to be changed. There is no part # on the invoice for the fluid so... not sure if it was OEM (he said it would be) parts and labor + tax and "shop supplies" bullshit $97. Drive on.

Re: Power Steering Fluid

The way to check the color of the fluid is to shine a light through the reservoir. Mine looks like honey again.
