The 02 Sensor Thread
The 02 Sensor Thread
I have done a bit of reading on this site about 02 sensors and the task of replacing them. I have a 1998 Honda Civic EX, and decided to replace my front 02 sensor myself after reading some of the posts by other members here. However, I don't think I have a solid understanding on how to go about it.
After looking for parts online, I see a plethora of options. Such things like "4 WIRE", "20 cm Long Wiring", "Without Connectors", and "Universal" confuse me. There is also a large spread among the prices, from $30 to $200. I have not done this specific job before but I have a strong background in working with the electronic system in my car, so I feel I will be capable of handling this.
Perhaps I can be enlightened with some links to information I should look over before attempting to do this myself. Any recommendations or advice could be very helpful for someone in my position. I remember I saw a diagram on the engine which located the parts that needed to be removed, however I can not find it now.
Thanks for any information, $350 at my local Firestone just seemed a little too much for a front 02 sensor replacement.

4 wire o2 sensors have 2 heater wires, and 2 signal wires. The only polarity you have to worry about is the wires on the signal. Go to your local parts store and just buy a generic one, as long as the voltage window is just as big. All the o2 does is switch from lean to stoich as long as your engine is running right.

Universal sensors require you to cut the plug off your old o2 sensor and wire it to the new one. the sensor comes with a color chart and connectors to make it relatively simple. If you want to simplify the install id suggest BOSCH p/n: 13249 or DENSO p/n: 234-4099. these are both for the d16 1998 civic EX primary o2 sensor. Price range seems to be around $50-60 online. Even amazon.com has them.

Re: The 02 Sensor Thread
If you know how to take a bolt out, and plug a phone into the wall, you should be able to do this with no problem. The only trick is you gotta use an open ended wrench to take it off and put it on because of the wires so you cant use a socket.

Re: The 02 Sensor Thread
i got the special sensor socket which is a socket with a slit to fit the wires thru. well worth it. also make sure you get the bosch OEM type sensor and NOT the universal. that way its just plug and play exactly like stock. I paid around $70 for each sensor and did them both. if you only do one, make sure you get the exact part number. they are not interchangeable.
