Make the intake truly cold

Oh those nice pretty chrome intakes, drive around then pop your hood, that pipe isnt cold, im an insualtor by trade, heres what i did, go to your local hardware shop and by some insualtion tape, its a black foam, 3 inch wide, since im an insualtor , mine turned out very well, i have the aem v2 , i insulated it from filter to throttle body, nice cuts, and ta da, the pipe stays cool from under hood heat, wont look as nice as the chrome, but u wont have a hot charge, try it,

Re: Make the intake truly cold

insulate or not, it really wont matter. DEI sells a cryO2 system that freezes the intake pipe and the most you would get is a few extra hp. air moves through that pipe way too fast to be affected by it. what you really should be doing is focus on keeping the engine bay cooler, so the intake sucks in colder air to start with. like jet coat the header, get a better upper grill, route the filter as close to the edge of the bay as possible, etc. i tried that intake wrap stuff a while back and in the summer, it actually made the pipe even hotter by 5 degrees.

Re: Make the intake truly cold

weird, we use a product called mascoat, its a spray type insulation you use with a compressor, we spray steam pipes with it, when it cures you can put your hand on the pipe, and barely feel the slightest of warm, if it want on there, ouch, anyways i did this to my manifold, after i gave a good cleaning, drive all day, and damn near put your face on it, the headers on my race car are done the same way, so i went ahead and wrapped the intake, trying to help...

Re: Make the intake truly cold

98% (I guess) of the change in air temperature happens before it hits the air intake. If you're going to buy other products at a hardware store, you'd get better results buying piping and clamps to extend your intake away from the engine.

Re: Make the intake truly cold

another good product is the hondata (sure others make them as well) intake manifold gasket, it keeps the heat from the motor from trasfering to your intake manifold, probably not a big deal for d17's but B'series benefits

Agreed! lol! I was driving down the highway the other day through some really cold weahter, coasting at around 120 km/h. I opened up the throttle just to see if the cold air rushing through my grille made a difference, and I actually noticed the speedometer needle moving faster than usual. That's probably the only thing I can enjoy about winter: slightly increased HP, lol.

well yeah, roughly 1hp increase for every 10F decrease in ambient air temp.

Re: Make the intake truly cold

make your own cai out of PVC. Kinda like how the k&n fipk2 is. The plastic conducts less heat than those metal intake pipes.
