Re: help.....engine noise tick

'my civic' is kind of vague...

what year? trim?

cause if it's an '08, we'd all tell you to take it back to the dealership...

but if it's an '88, we'd be able to give you some spots to check :P

Valve's most likely. I used to have a 98 auto that did it very noticeably. My recent 97 has almost no issues. I do have a ticking either cold or warm, but it's not an issue. Nothing to get worried about.

Also, there is a possibility that it's your PCV valve being crunched, because that makes a ticking noise.

hmm, i was also thinking it could be one of the belts... but you said it's coming from around the intake manifold... (i guess that's what you meant by 'MI' )

Re: help.....engine noise tick

its just valve chatter.

unless u revved it to the red line and slapped something... its a bent valve.

Well no I was saying it's not an issue if it's just the sound of the valves. I mean you could get a valve clearance job but I'm still confused if it's a good idea after 30k miles. I've read that once you touch the valves after that, then you can only make them worse. Someone correct me.

Re: help.....engine noise tick

you said the tick goes away when you rev then comes back when the revs come back down?

im sorry bro that sounds like a bad rod bearing to me. i have had plenty of those to come by. thats exactly how my car sounded before the rod bearing went out..

Re: help.....engine noise tick

mmm, maybe not a rod bearing. dont call me out on that though. it sounds very similar to a rod bearing. get a stethoscope and listen to different areas of your motor. if you hear no noise coming from the oil pan area of the motor then more than likely its NOT a rod bearing. go to auto and pick up a stethoscope.

Re: help.....engine noise tick

i dont think you understand. a rod bearing is a SERIOUS problem. you cant just buy a new bearing and expect it to work correctly. you need to redo/get a new crank etc.

Re: help.....engine noise tick

"One is that if you suspect bad bearings, the only way to know for sure is to pull the oil pan, remove some main and rod bearing caps and inspect the bearings. If the bearings are worn, they need to be replaced. But if they show evidence of damage or unusual wear, it’s pointless to replace them until you’ve diagnosed the underlying problem."

i found this.... but how would i know if/ be able to tell if the bearings are worn?

Re: help.....engine noise tick

Go get some 0w-30 full syn oil put this in and you will have no more problems. Trust me its sounds strange but its the best oil for your car, Its cold so you oil is not able to flow while its cold and 80% + of you oil is returning through your check valve. Use 0w-30 full sys all the time cold or hot weather. If you want to know why go here. www.supramania.com/aehaas/
