Rep Power: 242 Rear brakes: What do I need?
I'm confused what I need in addition to the drum pads. Supposedly some springs but I can't tell one from the other on there. Also, what are the symptoms that they are going out? At 120k I haven't noticed anything unusual.

If there is a brake masters near you? Just tell them that you think the rear brakes need new pads. They inspected mine for free and showed me I still had 80% pad left and my car had about 65k miles.

You need to jack up the car, make sure that it is safe and secure.
remove the rear wheel, release the parking brake, mark the hub to brake drum position and then remove the drum.
Have some brake cleaner avail. to wet the shoe /drum down as you don't want to breathe in the dust and or have it drifting through the air, especially if you are in a small garage area without much or any ventilation.
Look at the thickness of the friction material on the shoes and the condition. It should be smooth, no ridges or grooves, oily looking or burnt overheated look. One end tends to be worn at all while the thickness slowly gets less as you go to the other end. This is just due to the way drum brakes work.
look and the inside surface area of the drum.
It should be smooth without score marks , ridges or rings on the polished surdace that the shoe rubs against. Go to

Down load the manual for your car and read up the brakes section before you mess with it.

all you need for parts is shoes and a hardware kit (has springs and other parts you usually should replace). im at 85k and still on original drum and shoe, have 40% left too.
