Can someone identify this part?

Almost a year ago I purchased a 2005 Honda Civic SI Hatchback with an earlier motor. K20A I believe. A few months ago I put an AEM V2 cold air intake on it and discovered that a part had been JB welded and was broken.

On the diagram this part is connected to the hose # 16 and #17. Hose #16 connects to the Air Intake. This part has a nut fitting at the base and separates from the below section. I have been told that this part is called a Air bypass control valve and the entire assembly has to be purchased as one. This is odd to me since it looks as though it can be easily detached. Can anyone tell me for sure what this part is by looking at the diagram?

I was told to block off the hoses, so I did. However, I have noticed backfiring lately and am wondering if this could be the cause? If so, does anyone have a part number or know how I can locate this part without having to buy the entire assembly? Should I have someone check the timing regarding the backfire? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

The diagram shown looks like the water pump and water lines for the heater. You might want to check your image, I dont think you want water near the intake. It isnt uncommon for Honda to sell things in assembly form, even when it appears that you can separate parts.

Re: Can someone identify this part?

the diagram is correct. The hose #16 is attached to the air intake. The only function of the water pump is to control opening and closing of the valve.

Re: Can someone identify this part?

You're confusing the water pump with the thermostat, waterpump pumps the water through the engine, if it started and stopped it wouldn't very well be a pump, right? The thermostat opens when the temperature is right and then allows the collant to flow. anyways, Boiler is right, that looks coolant related and the only thing that remotely connects to the intake is the arrow that says e-15-10, which connects to your throttle body heater, as seen here:

Re: Can someone identify this part?

Hose # 16 is listed as TUBE, AIR ASSIST IN.
Hose # 17 is listed as TUBE, AIR ASSIST OUTLET

So, what is the "air" assisting?

Re: Can someone identify this part?

it helps the engine heat up quicker, i believe it leans out the a\f slightly, but i'm not sure. the air assist valve is listed in the diagram that you provided, it's what 16\17 go in\out of. I've read quie a bit on these over the last couple of days cause of this thread, they go out a lot and jb Wled seems to be the cheap fix, or you can replace it of course. I've alread looked at hondaautomotiveparts.com and acuraautomotiveparts too, both just sell the whole thing as a whole. I highly doubt this is causing your back firing, unless it is coming from under the hood, you'd hear it through the crack\break in the sensor. If the sensor was causing these bachfires it should ( in my line of thinking) only happen when the valve is in use (the car is warming up). So go out, jb weld that valve, then (after it drys)take it to a local auto parts store and have them pull codes, maybe thatll shed light on the back firing. or who knows, i've been known to be wrong (once.) maybe it is backfiring through that valve, either way it should be fixed.
And just to make sure i'm not a complete idoit, this part right?

Yes, that is the part! I took it out and am in the process of JB welding it. I will pull the valve cover in the morning and re-install the valve. (can't turn it with the valve cover in place as the inlet hits the cover when turning.) I also had a local parts guy look at the car and before he hooked up to pull codes, he said to take it to the tire shop for a front end check, seems like the noise is coming from the left front strut-spring assembly and not the engine. Very strange ---

Re: Can someone identify this part?

Thanks for your comments, research and suggestions Booba!

Took the part out, which required removal of the valve cover and performed a real nice JB weld on it. Went to put it back on and come to find out it hits the rocker when you turn it. We actually had to shave 1/4" or so off so that it could go back on. We cut out a section of a socket to secure the fit since it was hard to get any other tool in the area. In my opinion, this is a very bad designed part by honda. It appears as though it's designed to come right off, but you have to shave it down to clear the rocker. This must be why they sell the whole section as one. Such a waste.

Anyway....had the front end checked. (not the problem) Never thought it was the problem, but had it checked anyway.

The car still backfires from under the hood, but only after cold start and only between 1st and 2nd gear. I decided to only shift the car at higher RPM's after the cold start and the backfire has gone away. I've been watching it closely for at least a week. It seems as though there's some sort of back pressure build that causes backfire if the RPM's aren't high enough between 1st and 2nd gear after cold start. Very strange! I'll keep an eye on it and update when i determine what the prob is.

Problem definitely wasn't the valve, but learned a lot taking it off and hope this is useful to someone else if they ever have to remove it.

I'll post some pics of the socket we modified to put it back on.

Thanks!
