OEM Spoiler (Trunk Spring Questions)
OK i have read a bunch of threads from 2002, and im not 100% sure about this, but for the trunk. If u DIY the OEM factory spoiler, they say because of its weight u have to also install the new beefier trunk springs. Now i can install these without the springs, its just that i will have to lift my trunk all the way up... kinda like i do now??
Like i got this quote from one of them
"installation took maybe 45 minutes for the oem spoiler, and it was done at night, plus it took another 5-10 minutes to install the new trunk springs"
So i take it he didnt have to install the new springs right away. Idk, just kinda want more assurance.
Also do u have to have the trunk spring remover tool to put the springs on?

Alright, thanx in advance guys

Re: OEM Spoiler (Trunk Spring Questions)
You do not need a special tool, but it may make it easier.
You do not have to have the new springs when you ad a Park Bench to the trunk lid.
If you already are lifting your trunk because the springs are worn out then it will just be a little heavier.
It is nice to pop the trunk and watch it open by its self. So if you are a wussy and can't open the trunk then, it would be nice to have the springs help you.

you don't need the tool but it's safer/easier if you use it...just as a tip, make sure to have someone or something supporting the trunk lid when you remove the last spring else the trunk lid will fall on your back...yes, it's heavy enough to hurt...
you also don't really need the stronger springs installed...stock springs seem to work fine even w/ the spoiler installed

Re: OEM Spoiler (Trunk Spring Questions)
cool thanx for the input everyone, i think imma install it and keep the normal springs first, then based on how it feels i'll decided to but the beefier springs on or not
Re: OEM Spoiler (Trunk Spring Questions)
My car has the factory spoiler, but didn't come like that plus I have extreme dyno-mat on the trunk which puts on a lot of weight. Its not hard to open but if you don't bring it down it can slam pritty hard cause of the dyno-mat.
Re: OEM Spoiler (Trunk Spring Questions)
I installed the oem spoiler and didn't change the springs. You simply have to open the trunk with your hand. It's really not that hard. It stays open by itself if you open it all the way to the top. The only thing is, when other people are getting things from the trunk, they usually slam it shut pretty hard because they aren't used to the trunk and don't realize how heavy it is with the spoiler. The last annoying thing is that a lot of people will open the trunk by grabbing on to the spoiler. In other words, they use the spoiler as a handle to open the trunk. I always get pissed off when they do that but usually don't say anything.

Re: OEM Spoiler (Trunk Spring Questions)
the 4 holes for the spoiler is 8mm, and the hole for the wires is 10mm. I say u need the 6 is because when drilling you dont wanna just up and drill something the size it is, move yourself up the ladder, with a bigger size till u get to the desired diameter, makes the hole alot more smoother.

Re: OEM Spoiler (Trunk Spring Questions)
I gotta agree wit hwhat gearbox said ebay ones arn't that bad. I recently purchased an ebay one already painted. the material is nice and quality seems good. i brought it into work and compared it to an oem one. as far as I could see no huge difference in quality. i guess its what kind you buy of ebay maybe?
Re: OEM Spoiler (Trunk Spring Questions)
Dont buy cheap replicas then!! I have a replica which is absolutely perfect.........there is no difference when compared to OEM.
Also, I got the new springs, it was like $20-25 and my dealer installed them for free!
I would reccomend the springs, they are cheap and effective, so why not.

hey LT...this guy said it all pretty much. I did the same thing ur doing except i got the cheapo ebay one. still painted to match. u dont need new trunk springs i dont think. i didnt get them. when u pull up on the latch inside the car itll pop up but it wont lift up..itll still look closed..just lift it all the way open and ur fine.. and lmao everyone that opens ur trunk will slam it. not on purpose...even letting go of ur trunk halfway down, it slams shut. good luck post pics when u install it. hey...make a DIY for any dumb dumbs who cant get it right the first time

I was gonna DIY it, but because i got impatient, and started drilling and cleaning, and it was hot, i forgot to do it. Like i could DIY without pictures, but i hate that...
n e ways, yea i left my camera next to where i waxed my wing b4 putting it on. Also i think my trunk springs/bars are crap anywayz, cause i have always had to open my trunk manually. And if someone slams it i will get ticked, or if they use my spoiler as a handle lol.. But yeah this weekend when i wash and wax for the city meet, imma post up pics.
Same question to you for the replica, does it have civic etched into the bottom of it, like under the spoiler right next to the brake light?

Re: OEM Spoiler (Trunk Spring Questions)
no lol the ebay ones dont have civic written on the bottom. and what does quality (and extra weight) matter if it looks exactly the same as oem? its not something youre gonna be wearing out, it just sits there for looks, which if you have it painted, will be just fine.

Re: OEM Spoiler (Trunk Spring Questions)
Like i have bought replicated stuff before and some has been alright, but the majority has always had fitment problems, and quality problems. And everytime i go OEM its perfect.
I was also thinking about the LED's and their longevity. Like i saw another civic with the "oem replicated" spoiler and 3 of the LED's were not lit when he broke... braked... when he stepped on the brake lol. So yea, i dont wanna have to replace it or take it off to fix it ever, and with OEM (based on my previous OEM purchases) that will be the case.

Re: OEM Spoiler (Trunk Spring Questions)
i would def recommend putting on a 12v voltage regulator on even the oem spoiler. ive seen a ton of oems that have burnt out leds too anything from focus to mercedes. they wire them for 12v and car puts out 14+ so over time they just get killed. i already got a bunch of the regulators from radioshack i plan to put on my led tail power wires when they get here. its a tiny module that costs maybe $1 and will make sure the leds last as they should.
Re: OEM Spoiler (Trunk Spring Questions)
W/ the replica spoilers I installed for people:
*the plastic was always thinner (that's why the spoiler is lighter but the spoiler also cracks way more easily)
*the LED tailight wasn't completely sealed(water shouldn't get in but it could)
*the wire inside the light was not wrapped in foam tape(will rattle like a bitch if you have a subwoofer)
*the screws weren't stainless steel or coated for rust prevention
Overall, the replicas fit well enough and look pertty much identical to oem though...
As for underspoilers, all the aftermarket replicas i've seen were made of thinner abs plastic. I don't mind replica lips but I'd always go for OEM side skirts. Genuine honda skirts use clamps for mounting and they also have the rubber gasket on the edge. I've seen quite a few EM2's that had the car's paint rubbed down to metal because the replica skirts didn't have the rubber gasket. I got my oem skirts brand new factory painted for $250usd which was also cheaper than buying replicas + paint anyways...
